Health

# The Mudi's health

Hungary

The Mudi is generally a hardy, robust and resilient dog, with overall sound health. Like many medium-sized working breeds, it nevertheless deserves careful monitoring of the musculoskeletal system and the eyes, as well as neurological monitoring in the event of suggestive symptoms.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a usual life expectancy of 12 to 14 years, the Mudi can accompany its family for a long time if its activity, its diet and its veterinary follow-up remain suited to its profile as a sporting dog.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The breed shows good overall robustness and copes well with an active life when it is properly cared for. Its rustic profile does not exempt it from serious breeding, sensible screening and consistent management of effort throughout life.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Particular vigilance is recommended regarding the joints, the eyes and certain neurological disorders. Choosing a reputable breeder, controlling weight and regular veterinary follow-up help to limit risks and to detect possible problems early.

- Cataract: An eye condition that can progressively impair vision and warrants ophthalmologic veterinary monitoring.
- Hip dysplasia: A developmental abnormality of the hip joint that can promote pain, lameness, and osteoarthritis.
- Elbow dysplasia: A joint disorder that can hinder weight-bearing and limit the performance of an active dog.
- Epilepsy: Seizures may occur in some individuals and require a complete veterinary assessment.
- Patellar luxation: Displacement of the kneecap can cause locomotor discomfort, intermittent lameness, or pain.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Mudi has an intermediate tolerance to cold as well as to heat. Its coat protects it adequately, but intense efforts must be adapted during high heat and a suitable shelter remains necessary in cold or wet weather.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Mudi tends rather to remain athletic if it gets enough exercise, but a decrease in activity can quickly unbalance its body condition. Regular monitoring of its silhouette, adjusted rations and daily exercise help to preserve its joints and its endurance.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the hips, elbows and eyes checked in breeding dogs and according to the veterinarian's recommendations.
- Maintaining a stable weight reduces the strain on the joints of a sporty dog.
- Consult promptly in case of lameness, decreased vision or a seizure.

Vaccination

## Mudi vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Mudi need? Like all dogs, Mudis should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Mudi vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Mudi booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Mudi

Screenings of the hips, elbows and eyes are particularly relevant in this breed. In the presence of a family history or suspicious signs, a thorough veterinary opinion also makes it possible to assess the neurological risk and adapt the follow-up.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
