Health

# The Miniature American Shepherd's health

United States

The Miniature American Shepherd is overall a fairly sturdy dog when it lives in good conditions and benefits from regular veterinary follow-up. Its double coat protects it properly from cold and bad weather, but the breed has a known predisposition to certain ocular and joint conditions.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy generally between 13 and 15 years, this breed can accompany its family for a long time if it receives an appropriate diet, a stable weight, exercise and serious veterinary prevention.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The breed is described as generally robust, but this robustness does not exempt it from real health vigilance. The eyes and hips deserve particular attention, notably in the choice of the breeder and during monitoring throughout life.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

A serious selection of breeding dogs and regular veterinary checks help to limit some of the known risks in the breed. Early monitoring of vision, locomotion and body condition is particularly useful.

- Collie Eye Anomaly: Hereditary condition that can impair the development of certain structures of the eye and requires serious screening.
- Progressive retinal atrophy: Degenerative disease of the retina that leads to a progressive decrease in vision and then blindness.
- Hip dysplasia: Abnormal development of the hip joint that can cause pain, lameness and osteoarthritis.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Thanks to its double coat, the Miniature American Shepherd tolerates cold and moderate bad weather fairly well. Its tolerance to heat remains average, which means intense exertion during hot hours should be avoided and it should always be given access to shade and water.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This dog can be greedy and gain weight if portions and treats are not controlled. Maintaining a stable weight relies on a measured ration, limited rewards, and sufficient daily physical exercise.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the eyes checked if there is any doubt about vision.
- Monitor locomotion and gait, especially during growth.
- Maintain a stable weight to preserve the joints.
- Plan regular veterinary follow-up even in the absence of symptoms.

Vaccination

## Miniature American Shepherd vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Miniature American Shepherd need? Like all dogs, Miniature American Shepherds should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Miniature American Shepherd vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Miniature American Shepherd booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Miniature American Shepherd

Hip and eye examinations are among the particularly relevant checks for this breed. They are useful in breeding dogs as well as in the monitoring of an individual showing signs of locomotor discomfort or visual disorders.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.
