- Giant size: Food, space and gastric risks weigh heavily.

Who is it for?

Ideal for

- Farms and herds: That is its historical role.
- Large enclosed estates: There it finds a territory commensurate with its size.
- Experienced owners: It needs people accustomed to livestock guardian dogs.

- City and apartment: None of its needs are met there.
- First dogs: Power and autonomy are too high.
- Looking for a permanently cuddly dog: It remains a guardian, not a couch teddy bear.

Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Transmontano Mastiff, or Cão de Gado Transmontano, has protected for centuries the herds of Trás-os-Montes, in northeastern Portugal, against the wolf. Taller and leaner than other Iberian mastiffs, it was selected to patrol vast areas. The breed was officially recognized later than the Portuguese Mountain Dog. In France, it remains rare and reserved for properties or sheep farms.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

Giant dog, long-legged, powerful without excessive heaviness. The head is massive, the stop not very pronounced, the ears drooping and triangular. The coat is medium-long, fuller on the breeches and on the tail. The coats are fawn, wolf grey, yellow, marked white or spotted. The general impression is that of an athletic guardian, capable of covering ground.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

Independent, calm, very territorial. He becomes attached to his group but is not a couch dog. With the children of the household, he can be protective if he grew up with them. Visitors are monitored. Serious socialization is non-negotiable.

Intelligent Protective

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

He patrols, observes and barks to signal. He needs a large enclosed area, not an apartment. Useful exercise is walking and guarding, not speed sports. A young dog that is too isolated becomes a difficult adult.

Training

## Training and socialization

Early, social and clear training: visits, leash, inhibition, close-range recall. Physical confrontation is a mistake. This is not a sport bite dog. The owner must be calm, consistent and experienced.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Mâtin transmontano

A Mâtin transmontano puppy is often priced between 900 and 1,800 euros. The real budget is for the fencing, the food, and the responsibility of a giant.

Health

## Health at a glance

Rustic giant: growth, stomach, joints. A giant-breed puppy diet and non-slip floors are essential. Responsible breeding avoids overly heavy, hypertype subjects.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

The Mâtin transmontano needs a complete, digestible diet adjusted to its age, its activity and its body condition. Protein quality and control of energy intake matter as much as the volume of the ration.

Did you know?

## Fun facts and popularity

It is distinguished from the Estrela Mountain Dog, stockier and more widespread. In Portugal, it still works with transhumant shepherds. Its name refers to the province of Trás-os-Montes, “behind the mountains”.
