Health

# The Manchester Terrier's health

United Kingdom

The Manchester Terrier is overall a robust and resilient dog, but the breed has certain predispositions that deserve careful monitoring throughout life. A good lifestyle, a stable weight and regular veterinary check-ups help keep it in shape.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy of around 13 to 15 years, the Manchester Terrier is one of the small dogs that can accompany their family for a long time when its care, its activity and its medical follow-up are well adapted.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its overall robustness is adequate, but it is not comfortable in extreme climates. Its short coat offers little protection from intense cold, and it is also advisable to avoid high heat, especially during exertion.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Particular vigilance is recommended regarding the eyes, the skin, the nervous system and certain orthopedic or digestive conditions reported in the breed. Any lameness, visual discomfort, neurological episode or persistent digestive disorder warrants a prompt consultation.

- Epilepsy: The breed may experience neurological seizures requiring a veterinary diagnosis and appropriate management.
- Glaucoma: An increase in intraocular pressure can threaten vision and requires prompt consultation.
- Cutaneous asthenia: This abnormality results in abnormally fragile and overly elastic skin, with a risk of lesions.
- Hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy: A narrowing of the pyloric canal can cause vomiting and digestive disorders.
- Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease: This condition affecting the femoral head can cause pain and lameness in young dogs.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Manchester Terrier does not tolerate extreme climates well. Its short coat requires protecting it from severe cold and limiting activities to the coolest hours in summer.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This breed may be prone to weight gain if the rations are not adapted to its activity level. Regular monitoring of body condition and portions helps prevent overweight.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Maintain a stable weight and monitor gait.
- Keep up with vaccinations, deworming and identification.
- Consult promptly in case of lameness, vomiting or lethargy.

Vaccination

## Manchester Terrier vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Manchester Terrier need? Like all dogs, Manchester Terriers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Manchester Terrier vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Manchester Terrier booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Manchester Terrier

Regular veterinary follow-up with attention paid to the eyes, the skin, the musculoskeletal system and neurological status is relevant, especially if clinical signs appear or if there is a known family history.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
