Health

# The Majorca Mastiff's health

Spain

The Dogue de Majorque is a rather hardy and resilient dog overall. Its heavy build nevertheless requires monitoring its physical condition, its weight and the quality of its exertion so as not to overload the musculoskeletal system.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With an adapted lifestyle, a controlled diet and regular veterinary follow-up, the Dogue de Majorque generally lives between 10 and 12 years. Its longevity depends a lot on maintaining a correct weight and well-managed growth.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

This breed shows good overall robustness for a molossoid-type dog. It tolerates an active but reasonable lifestyle, provided that excessive exertion and situations that promote overweight are avoided.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

The main point of vigilance concerns the joints and, more broadly, any overload linked to its body mass. Progressive growth, suitable exercises and good control of body condition are essential to keep it in shape.

- Joint sensitivity: Its heavy build justifies monitoring the joints, especially during growth, in case of overweight or during overly intense exertion.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Dogue de Majorque tolerates both cold and heat moderately. Its short coat offers little protection from extreme temperatures, which requires providing shade, fresh water and activities adapted to the seasons.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Weight management is important in this breed, because each extra kilo can put strain on the joints. A measured ration, limited treats and regular but moderate activity help to maintain a correct silhouette.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor weight throughout life to limit the load on the joints
- Adjust exercise during growth and avoid sudden or repeated exertion
- Consult promptly in case of lameness, stiffness or a drop in energy

Vaccination

## Majorca Mastiff vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Majorca Mastiff need? Like all dogs, Majorca Mastiffs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Majorca Mastiff vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Majorca Mastiff booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Majorca Mastiff

Standard veterinary follow-up, supplemented by particular attention to locomotor condition and growth, is recommended. In case of discomfort, stiffness or reduced activity, an early assessment makes it possible to adjust exercise and management.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
