Feeding

# Feeding your Lhasa Apso well

Tibet

The Lhassa Apso needs a complete and digestible diet, adapted to its small size, its age and its activity level. Good-quality kibble generally suits it very well, with quantities adjusted according to its daily energy expenditure.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: A puppy diet for a small size, divided into several meals, helps support harmonious growth without excess.
- Adult: In adulthood, a measured and stable ration helps maintain good body condition and a beautiful coat quality.
- Senior: For the older dog, a more digestible formula is preferred and regular monitoring of weight, appetite and vitality.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

A premium diet for small dogs, rich in quality animal proteins and well balanced in fats, is generally suitable for the Lhassa Apso. The chosen formula must also help maintain a beautiful quality of skin and coat.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

Quantities vary depending on the dog's weight, age, neutering/spaying status, and activity. It is preferable to rely on the manufacturer's recommendations and then adjust with the veterinarian according to the Lhassa Apso's actual body condition.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 4 - 5 kg | 101 - 147 g | 2 |
| 5 - 6 kg | 119 - 173 g | 2 |
| 6 - 7 kg | 137 - 199 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary transition must be done gradually over several days in order to avoid digestive disorders. The new diet is introduced little by little by increasing the proportions, while monitoring appetite, stools and digestive comfort.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. In summer, after walks or in a heated home, you must be particularly attentive to its hydration.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and represent a small part of the daily intake. They are useful for training, provided they are simple, digestible and included in the overall calculation of the ration.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration rather than pouring it in at random.
- Split the meals for better digestive comfort.
- Adjust the ration according to actual activity and body condition.
- Keep treats for training and in limited quantities.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, you should avoid chocolate, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, avocado, cooked bones, alcohol, coffee, tea, very fatty foods and sweeteners such as xylitol, as they can cause digestive or neurological disorders or severe poisoning.
