Health

# The Leonberger's health

Germany

The Leonberger is generally robust and tolerates cold well, but its large size exposes it to several orthopedic, neurological and digestive conditions that justify serious monitoring throughout life. The choice of a rigorous breeding program and control of growth are particularly important in this breed.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its life expectancy is generally between 8 and 12 years, which is respectable for a dog of this size. Well-managed growth, controlled weight, suitable activity and regular veterinary monitoring help preserve its longevity.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Leonberger withstands harsh climatic conditions well and has an overall solid constitution, but its robustness remains tempered by several known breed predispositions. Its large size also increases the impact of joint or digestive problems when they occur.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Particular vigilance must be paid to the locomotor system, the risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus and certain hereditary conditions described in the breed. Any breathing difficulty, weakness of the hindquarters, exercise intolerance or lameness must prompt a rapid consultation.

- Hip dysplasia: Common joint condition in large dogs that can cause pain, lameness, and early osteoarthritis.
- Gastric dilatation-volvulus: Serious emergency favored by large size, justifying split meals and rest before and after the ration.
- Osteosarcoma: Aggressive bone tumor observed more often in giant breeds.
- Hereditary polyneuropathy: Neurological disorder described in the breed, notably in the LPN1 and LPN2 forms.
- Laryngeal paralysis: Respiratory disorder linked to impairment of the laryngeal muscles, which can cause discomfort and exercise intolerance.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Leonberger tolerates cold very well thanks to its dense coat and its thick undercoat. On the other hand, it does not tolerate heat well and must be protected from intense exertion during hot periods, with permanent access to shade and fresh water.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Even if the tendency to become overweight is not the most pronounced in this breed, weight control remains essential to limit the load on the joints and reduce the risks linked to its large size. A measured ration, monitoring of body condition and regular exercise without excess are recommended.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Schedule regular orthopedic monitoring, especially during growth.
- Consult promptly in case of a swollen abdomen, agitation, or unproductive retching.
- Maintain a healthy weight to preserve the joints.
- Discuss the lineage’s neurological history before adoption.

Vaccination

## Leonberger vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Leonberger need? Like all dogs, Leonbergers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Leonberger vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Leonberger booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Leonberger

It is advisable to screen for dysplasia, to discuss the family history of polyneuropathy and to closely monitor the growth of young subjects. Careful orthopedic, cardiorespiratory and digestive follow-up is particularly relevant in this large dog.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
