Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Landseer is said to have originated from crosses between Newfoundland dogs and Pyrenean Mountain Dogs. It owes its name to the British painter Edwin Landseer, who often depicted dogs of this type in his works. Highly appreciated in England in the 19th century, it then experienced a decline before being preserved by Swiss, German and Austrian breeders. The breed was definitively recognized by the FCI in 1960.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Landseer is a giant dog, robust and harmonious, taller on legs than the Newfoundland, especially in the male. Its body is broad and powerful, with a firm back, a deep chest and a solid bone structure. Its coat is long, dense, smooth and fine, with an undercoat less abundant than in the Newfoundland. The color is predominantly white with black patches on the body and the rump, while the head is black with a white muzzle marked by a symmetrical white blaze.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

Affectionate, sociable and calm, the Landseer enjoys family life and is generally gentle with children. Its impressive size makes it a deterrent dog, without being a particularly biting guard dog. It likes the company of its loved ones and retains a calm, balanced and benevolent temperament.

Affectionate Playful Sociable

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, the Landseer remains calm in the house if it gets enough exercise. It likes long walks, outdoor activities and especially water, where it is very much at ease. Its need for space and its large size make it better suited to a house with a garden than to an apartment.

Training

## Training and socialization

Training the Landseer requires consistency, patience and real gentleness in methods. Its calm temperament makes learning easier, but it can prove less obedient than other large working dogs. Early socialization and consistent training are important to properly channel its power and strengthen its cooperation.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Landseer

The purchase price of the Landseer varies depending on the quality of the bloodline, the seriousness of the breeding, the health tests carried out and the puppy’s intended purpose. Its large size then implies a higher maintenance budget than that of many medium-sized breeds.

Health

## Health at a glance

The Landseer is an overall robust dog, with solid health when it is bred seriously and kept at a proper weight. Like many giant breeds, it nevertheless requires particular vigilance regarding the musculoskeletal system and the management of growth in the young dog.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

The Landseer needs a complete, digestible and well-balanced diet, adapted to its giant size and its activity level. The quality of the ration is important throughout life, with particular attention during growth, a sensitive period in large dogs.

## Fun facts and popularity

The Landseer owes its name to Edwin Landseer, a British painter of the 19th century famous for his depictions of large black and white dogs. Often compared to the Newfoundland, it is distinguished in particular by a taller, longer-legged silhouette and by the recognition of a continental European type. Its ease in the water is also among its most striking traits.
