Feeding

# Feeding your Lakeland Terrier well

United Kingdom

The Lakeland Terrier needs a complete, digestible diet adapted to its age, activity and body condition. An adult generally weighs from 6 to 9 kg. The quality of the ration and weight control protect digestion and joints.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
- Adult: Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to the ideal weight and actual activity.
- Senior: Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Complete quality kibble for small dogs, possibly combined with a wet portion, generally works well. A home-prepared ration should only be considered with the advice of a veterinary nutritionist.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount depends on the density of the food, the ideal weight, sterilization and actual activity. An adult generally weighs from 6 to 9 kg. The manufacturer's guidelines serve as a starting point, then the ration is adjusted according to body condition.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 6 - 7 kg | 137 - 199 g | 2 |
| 7 - 8 kg | 155 - 225 g | 2 |
| 8 - 9 kg | 166 - 227 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change of food must be gradual over seven to ten days, gradually increasing the proportion of the new food to limit digestive upsets.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times. Needs increase with heat, exertion and a dry diet. Take water on walks and offer regular breaks.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats remain occasional and represent less than 10% of the daily energy intake. They are deducted from the ration in order to avoid weight gain.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
- Deduct training treats from the daily ration.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, grapes, xylitol, onion, garlic, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones, and very fatty or very salty foods are dangerous for dogs. In case of ingestion, contact a veterinarian quickly.
