Health

# The Korean Jindo Dog's health

South Korea

The Korean Jindo Dog is robust and generally enjoys solid health. Its double coat provides good protection against harsh climatic conditions. However, the breed is not hypoallergenic and certain disorders must be monitored.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its life expectancy is generally between 11 and 13 years. A suitable diet, regular activity and veterinary follow-up help preserve its quality of life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

With a solid build, this dog benefits from high robustness. Its double coat effectively protects its body, while its moderate tendency to gain weight remains manageable with an appropriate ration and exercise.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Even if no single predisposition defines the breed, particular vigilance is recommended regarding the joints, the eyes, the thyroid and allergic manifestations.

- Cataract: An opacification of the lens likely to progressively impair vision.
- Hip dysplasia: An abnormality of the coxofemoral joint that can cause pain and locomotor discomfort.
- Elbow dysplasia: A developmental disorder of the elbow joint that can lead to lameness and osteoarthritis.
- Hypothyroidism: A hormonal insufficiency of the thyroid that requires a veterinary diagnosis.
- Allergies: Occasional reactions that may manifest in particular through skin or digestive signs.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Its dense undercoat ensures very good tolerance to cold. It tolerates heat less well and must then have shade, fresh water and activities arranged during the coolest hours.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Its tendency to gain weight is rather low, but its diet must remain proportionate to its size and its activity. Long daily walks help maintain its physical condition.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the hips and thyroid function checked.
- Examine the coat, ears, eyes and paw pads after outings in a natural environment.
- Brush the teeth regularly to limit tartar.
- Monitor the claws and trim them if they do not wear down naturally.

Vaccination

## Korean Jindo Dog vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Korean Jindo Dog need? Like all dogs, Korean Jindo Dogs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Korean Jindo Dog vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Korean Jindo Dog booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Korean Jindo Dog

Hip screening and a check of thyroid function are recommended. Veterinary follow-up can be supplemented depending on age and the signs observed, notably for the eyes, elbows, or allergies.
