Health

# The Karst Shepherd Dog's health

Slovenia

Rustic, robust and resilient, the Berger du massif du Karst generally enjoys good health. Its double coat provides good protection against bad weather and no major pathological predisposition is particularly reported for the breed. As with any large dog, growth, joints and weight nevertheless deserve regular monitoring.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

An appropriate lifestyle, regular activity, a measured diet and preventive veterinary follow-up help it to commonly reach 11 to 13 years.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its selection as a working dog in a mountainous environment has given it a solid build, good stamina and real resistance to harsh conditions. Its large size nevertheless requires sparing its joints during growth and monitoring its body condition in adulthood.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Even if the breed does not present any well-established specific predisposition, careful monitoring of the musculoskeletal system, the ears, the skin under the dense coat and the body condition remains recommended.

- Joint fragility in large dogs: Overly rapid growth, excess weight, or unsuitable exertion can put strain on the hips and elbows; a controlled diet and screening of breeding dogs are recommended.
- Ear irritations: Drooping ears should be examined regularly in order to spot redness, odor, or a buildup of debris.
- Heatstroke: The double, dense coat requires limiting exertion during hot hours and ensuring shade, water, and ventilation.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Its double, long and abundant coat effectively protects it from the cold and bad weather. During periods of intense heat, activity must be shifted to cooler hours, with permanent access to shade and water, because its dense coat limits its tolerance to high temperatures.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The tendency to gain weight requires measuring portions and adjusting energy intake to the activity level. An athletic silhouette reduces stress on the joints; treats must remain occasional and be deducted from the daily ration.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the dog examined at least once a year by a veterinarian.
- Monitor the weight and the condition of the joints throughout life.
- Brush the coat every week and inspect the skin.
- Check and clean the ears with a suitable product if necessary.
- Limit intense exertion during growth and in very hot weather.

Vaccination

## Karst Shepherd Dog vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Karst Shepherd Dog need? Like all dogs, Karst Shepherd Dogs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Karst Shepherd Dog vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Karst Shepherd Dog booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.
