Health

# The Japanese Terrier's health

Japan

The Japanese Terrier is generally a small, fairly healthy dog, with no major predisposition widely reported in the breed. Its main point of vigilance mainly concerns its very short coat, which offers little protection against cold, wind and humidity.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With good lifestyle hygiene, an appropriate diet and regular veterinary follow-up, the Japanese Terrier generally lives between 12 and 14 years. Its longevity depends largely on maintaining a proper weight, sufficient daily activity and good protection against harsh climatic conditions.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its robustness is average to good for a small companion dog, but it is not made to remain exposed to bad weather for long periods. Its light build and very short coat require particular vigilance in winter and during outings in damp weather.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Monitoring the skin, general condition and thermal comfort is important in this breed. Even in the absence of a marked predisposition to a particular disease, preventive veterinary follow-up remains recommended as for any small active dog.

- Sensitivity to cold: Its very short coat offers little protection against cold, wind, and humidity, which requires increased vigilance during outings in the cold season.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Japanese Terrier tolerates cold and bad weather poorly due to its very short coat. It is more comfortable in a temperate environment and must be dried quickly after a wet outing, with additional protection if temperatures drop noticeably.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This dog must retain a slender and harmonious silhouette. A ration adjusted to its activity, combined with daily outings and regular weight monitoring, helps prevent weight gain and maintain its mobility.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Protect it from cold and humidity during outings
- Regularly monitor weight and body condition
- Check the skin, ears, and paw pads after walks
- Maintain regular dental and veterinary follow-up

Vaccination

## Japanese Terrier vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Japanese Terrier need? Like all dogs, Japanese Terriers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Japanese Terrier vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Japanese Terrier booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Japanese Terrier

Routine veterinary check-ups, dental examination, checking skin condition and monitoring weight are the most useful basics. In the case of a breeding project, serious monitoring of bloodlines and the general condition of breeding dogs remains essential.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
