Health

# The Japanese Chin's health

Japan

The Japanese Spaniel is a breed with generally good longevity but rather delicate, which requires careful monitoring of certain health points. Its morphology as a small short-faced dog and its large eyes notably expose it to ocular and respiratory fragilities. Regular care, a calm lifestyle and regular veterinary check-ups help to keep it in good shape.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy around 12 to 14 years, the Japanese Spaniel can share its family's life for a long time when it benefits from a suitable diet, a stable weight and regular veterinary follow-up. Prevention and monitoring of the breed's specific frailties play an important role in this longevity.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Despite its lively appearance and pleasant temperament, the Japanese Spaniel is not among the most robust breeds. Its prominent eyes, drooping ears, and sensitivity to high heat require particular vigilance, especially in summer and in the most delicate individuals.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Regular attention to the eyes, ears, breathing and thermal comfort helps to quickly spot the first signs of discomfort. In this small-sized breed, prevention and early consultation in case of discomfort are preferable to waiting.

- Eye conditions: Its large exposed eyes require regular monitoring to quickly detect irritation, dryness, trauma, or other eye disorders.
- Cardio-respiratory disorders: Its morphology and general sensitivity can promote certain respiratory or cardiac problems that warrant careful veterinary follow-up.
- Ear conditions: Its drooping ears can retain moisture and debris, which increases the risk of irritation or otitis if hygiene is neglected.
- Heat sensitivity: High temperatures are poorly tolerated and can quickly lead to discomfort, shortness of breath, or heatstroke.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Japanese Spaniel tolerates cold and heat moderately, with increased vigilance during hot spells. High temperatures, intense exertion in full sun and poorly ventilated environments must be avoided, especially due to its short face and respiratory sensitivity.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Weight gain is not its main flaw, but its small size does not leave much room in case of excess. Measured portions, limited treats and gentle but regular activity help maintain a comfortable silhouette and avoid overloading its joints and breathing.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Clean and monitor the eyes regularly.
- Check the ears and keep them clean and dry.
- Avoid going out during the hottest hours in summer.
- Consult promptly in case of respiratory or eye discomfort.

Vaccination

## Japanese Chin vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Japanese Chin need? Like all dogs, Japanese Chins should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Japanese Chin vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Japanese Chin booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Japanese Chin

Veterinary monitoring focused on the examination of the eyes, heart, ears and breathing is relevant in this breed. Regular check-ups, combined with good ocular and auricular hygiene, often make it possible to act early in the event of a disorder.
