Health

# The Jagdterrier's health

Germany

The Jagd Terrier is a robust, hardy and enduring dog, with overall solid health. The breed is not known for accumulating a large number of systematic frailties, but regular monitoring remains important, especially in very active individuals.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With good living conditions, suitable activity and regular veterinary follow-up, the Jagd Terrier often lives between 12 and 14 years. Its longevity depends in particular on the quality of its care, its ideal weight and the early screening of possible joint or eye disorders.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Jagd Terrier has good overall endurance and copes well with an active lifestyle. This robustness does not eliminate the need for vigilance regarding the eyes, joints and recovery after sustained exertion, particularly in dogs used for hunting.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Even if the breed is generally robust, it is useful to monitor the joints, the eyes and tolerance to exertion. Regular check-ups help to detect early problems likely to affect mobility, vision or physical performance.

- Cataract: An opacification of the lens can progressively impair vision and requires veterinary monitoring.
- Exercise-induced collapse: An episode of exercise intolerance may occur in some individuals and should lead to a prompt evaluation.
- Hip dysplasia: This joint abnormality can hinder locomotion and promote premature wear of the joint.
- Glaucoma: An increase in intraocular pressure is a veterinary emergency that can threaten vision.
- Deafness: A decrease in hearing, partial or total, can affect safety and the quality of communication with the dog.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Jagd Terrier shows an intermediate tolerance to cold as well as heat. It adapts correctly to different climates, provided that intense exertion is avoided during the hottest hours and that it is offered suitable shelter in cold or wet weather.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The breed does not show a strong tendency to gain weight, but maintaining a good healthy weight remains essential. Portions must be adjusted according to the dog's age, activity and use, especially during hunting periods when energy expenditure increases.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Check the eyes and ears after outings in nature.
- Monitor locomotion and recovery after sustained exertion.
- Keep vaccinations and veterinary check-ups up to date.

Vaccination

## Jagdterrier vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Jagdterrier need? Like all dogs, Jagdterriers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Jagdterrier vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Jagdterrier booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Jagdterrier

A regular veterinary examination with particular attention to the eyes, hips and general condition after exertion is relevant in this breed. Depending on the lines and lifestyle, orthopedic and ophthalmological screening may be useful before breeding.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
