Feeding

# Feeding your Jagdterrier well

Germany

The Jagd Terrier needs a high-quality diet, rich in protein and adapted to its age, its size and its activity level. A moderately active companion dog will not have the same needs as an individual used regularly for hunting.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Growth food for small dogs, in three meals, with early socialization to hunting noises and other dogs.
- Adult: More energetic ration on working days, lighter at rest.
- Senior: Digestible food, monitoring teeth and joints.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

A complete premium diet for an active dog, with good nutritional density and quality proteins, generally suits the Jagd Terrier well. The choice between kibble, a balanced home-prepared ration or a mixed diet must remain consistent with its activity and be validated if necessary with a veterinarian.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

Daily quantities must be adjusted according to weight, actual physical expenditure and the season. A Jagd Terrier working a lot or hunting regularly will often need a more energy-rich ration than a dog living mainly as a companion.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 7 - 8 kg | 120 - 170 g | 2 |
| 8 - 9 kg | 140 - 190 g | 2 |
| 9 - 10 kg | 155 - 210 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be done gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A gentle transition also helps to assess good tolerance of the new food.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. Hydration deserves special attention after exercise, in hot weather and in very active dogs.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can be useful in training, but they must remain moderate and integrated into the daily energy intake. It is preferable to choose simple and digestible rewards.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Adjust the ration on hunting days to avoid overweight in the off-season.
- Use part of the ration as training rewards.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, cooked bones, alcohol, xylitol and very fatty foods, as they can cause serious digestive or neurological disorders, or potentially fatal poisoning.
