Feeding

# Feeding your Italian Greyhound well

Italy

The Italian Greyhound needs a quality diet, digestible and suited to its small size, its age and its activity level. Well-measured meals help support its fine musculature without promoting excess weight.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
- Adult: Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.
- Senior: Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium kibble for an active small dog generally suits very well, provided it is rich in good-quality proteins and formulated for a small size. A home-prepared or mixed ration can also be considered if it is properly balanced with a professional.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount must be adjusted to the actual weight, body condition, exercise level and energy density of the chosen food. In adults, the ration is generally divided into two meals per day.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 3 kg | 70 - 85 g | 2 |
| 3 - 4 kg | 85 - 105 g | 2 |
| 4 - 5 kg | 100 - 120 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive disorders. Switching to a new formula is done by gradually increasing the proportion of the new food.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must be available at all times. After exercise, in hot weather or in the case of dry feeding, particular attention must be paid to good hydration.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be included in the overall ration. They are useful in training, but excess quickly promotes a disproportionate caloric intake in a dog that is so light.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
- Avoid intense exertion just before and after the meal.
- Deduct training treats from the daily ration.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, avocado, very fatty foods, alcohol, xylitol and cooked bones should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or veterinary emergencies.
