Feeding

# Feeding your Irish Wolfhound well

Ireland

The Irish Wolfhound needs a high-quality diet, adapted to its age, its activity and its very large size. Dietary management is particularly important during growth, in order to support development without promoting excessive weight gain or growth that is too rapid.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
- Adult: Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.
- Senior: Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium complete kibble for giant dogs generally works well, with a formula adapted to the life stage and a good balance between digestible proteins, controlled energy and joint support. The ration must be consistent with the dog's actual activity.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

Quantities vary greatly depending on weight, age, neutering and daily energy expenditure. In this breed, it is better to split the ration into 2 meals per day and regularly reassess portions with the veterinarian or according to changes in body condition.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 40 - 49 kg | 586 - 794 g | 2 |
| 49 - 59 kg | 698 - 944 g | 2 |
| 59 - 68 kg | 810 - 1093 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive disorders. A change that is too abrupt can be poorly tolerated, especially in a large dog that is sensitive on the digestive level.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. After exertion or in hot weather, regular hydration should be encouraged without causing too rapid ingestion in large quantities.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be included in the calculation of the daily ration. It is preferable to choose simple and digestible rewards, especially for a large-breed dog whose weight balance must be preserved.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
- Avoid intense exertion just before and after the meal.
- Deduct training treats from the daily ration.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, you should avoid chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, alcohol, coffee, sweeteners such as xylitol and cooked bones, which can cause serious poisoning or digestive complications. In this breed, meals that are too large and intense exercise around mealtimes also increase the risk of stomach torsion.
