Strengths and weaknesses

- Athletic: It is an enduring, fast and agile dog, well suited to regular physical activities.
- Affectionate with its family: It creates a close bond with its owner while keeping a balanced temperament at home.
- Simple maintenance: Its coat generally requires few constraints outside of regular basic care.

- Strong hunting instinct: Its tendency to chase game requires a well-trained recall and secure outings.
- Not well suited to cold: Its slender build and certain coat varieties make it sensitive to low temperatures.
- Sedentary life is difficult: A lack of exercise can lead to frustration, agitation and poor day-to-day balance.

Who is it for?

Ideal for

- Active owners: The Podenco Ibicenco suits people who can ensure long outings and real physical exercise.
- House with secure land: A spacious, well-fenced environment makes it easier to manage its energy and its chasing instinct.
- Fans of sensitive dogs: It appeals to households that appreciate a refined dog, close to its family and trained gently.

Not recommended for

- Very sedentary people: Its need for regular activity is incompatible with a lifestyle with little mobility.
- Households with small free-roaming animals: Its predatory instinct can complicate cohabitation with potential prey.
- Cramped housing without real outings: A life that is too confined without sufficient exercise does not suit this breed well.

Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Podenco Ibicenco originates from the Balearic Islands, especially Ibiza, but also Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera. A very ancient breed, it was selected for hunting rabbits and hares without weapons, by day as well as by night, thanks to its speed, sight, scent and hearing. Over time, it also spread to the Spanish mainland, notably in Catalonia and in the Valencia region, then into the south of France.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Podenco Ibicenco is a large dog (58 to 72 cm), lean, harmonious and slightly longer than tall. Its head is long and fine, its ears are large, erect and very mobile, and its almond-shaped eyes often show an amber tint. The chest is deep but narrow, the tail long and the gait supple and fast. The coat can be smooth, harsh or long, most often white and red, sometimes solid white or red.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

The Podenco Ibicenco combines a strong hunting instinct with a balanced temperament at home. It is attached to its owner, affectionate with its family and rather reserved with strangers. It is not a very deterrent guard dog, but a sensitive, alert and responsive dog, which appreciates being able to get regular exercise.

Affectionate Playful

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, the Podenco Ibicenco needs activity and space to express its endurance and liveliness. Simple short outings are not enough for it in the long term. It can live with other dogs if socialization is well conducted, but its chasing instinct requires particular vigilance with small animals. Indoors, it can remain calm when its physical needs are met.

Training

## Training and socialization

The training of the Podenco Ibicenco must start early, in particular recall, essential in this hunting dog. Methods based on positive reinforcement, consistency and rewards give the best results. Brutality must be avoided, because this sensitive dog can become stubborn if the relationship of trust is not preserved.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Ibizan Hound

The purchase price of the Podenco Ibicenco varies mainly depending on the quality of the breeding, the selection of breeding dogs, the health tests carried out and the rarity of the breed in the area sought. A well-socialized puppy from a reputable breeder generally represents the safest choice.

Health

## Health at a glance

The Podenco Ibicenco is a hardy and generally resilient dog, but it is not free from hereditary predispositions. Serious breeding, regular veterinary follow-up and good management of physical activity help to preserve its overall condition and longevity.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

The Podenco Ibicenco needs good-quality food, adapted to its age, its size and above all to its activity level. In a dog used for hunting or very athletic, energy needs can increase markedly during certain periods, then decrease again afterwards.

## Fun facts and popularity

The Podenco Ibicenco is renowned for its qualities as a rabbit hunter and its ability to work with agility on dry, rocky and difficult terrain. Its slender silhouette and large ears make it an immediately recognizable breed, while its ancient origins fuel its reputation as a primitive dog that has remained close to its original function.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions about the Ibizan Hound

Answers to common questions from future owners before their new companion arrives.

### Can the Podenco Ibicenco live in an apartment?

This is not the easiest setting for it. The Podenco Ibicenco does not cope well with an overly restricted life if its exercise needs are not extensively met, and it thrives more in an environment offering space and long, regular outings.

### Does the Podenco Ibicenco get along with children?

It can live well with respectful children, especially if it has been properly socialized. However, its level of compatibility remains more moderate than that of some very family-oriented breeds, and cohabitation should always be supervised with common sense.

### Is recall easy with the Podenco Ibicenco?

Recall requires real work, as the Podenco Ibicenco's hunting instinct is pronounced. Early, consistent training based on positive reinforcement significantly improves reliability, without ever completely eliminating its chasing instincts.
