Health

# The Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer's health

Hungary

The Hungarian Short-haired Pointer has rather robust health and no particular breed-specific problem is reported. Regular veterinary follow-up, suitable activity and a balanced diet remain essential.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With regular care, a suitable diet and daily activity, its life expectancy is generally between 12 and 14 years.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its robustness is generally good, without being exceptional. Its active lifestyle requires monitoring its physical condition, its ears and any discomfort appearing after exertion.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Regular attention must be paid to the ears, especially after outings in natural environments or work in water, in order to remove debris and limit the risk of infection.

- Hip dysplasia: To be screened in breeding dogs; overweight and strenuous exertion at a young age increase the risk.
- Eye disorders: A regular ophthalmological examination is recommended in the breed.
- Epilepsy: Seizures are described in certain lines and justify monitoring.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

It tolerates heat rather well and cold to an average extent. The absence of an undercoat justifies increased vigilance during cold periods, while activity must be adapted during periods of intense heat.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Its high activity level helps maintain a stable weight, but the ration must remain proportionate to age, weight, body condition and actual expenditure. Any lasting weight gain should lead to reassessing diet and exercise with a veterinarian.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Inspect and clean the ears after outings, especially after working in water.
- Adapt the effort to high heat and provide fresh water.
- Regularly monitor weight, joints, and recovery after exercise.
- Keep vaccinations, antiparasitics, and veterinary check-ups up to date.

Vaccination

## Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer need? Like all dogs, Hungarian Shorthaired Pointers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer

A regular veterinary examination, checking the ears, skin, eyes, joints and body condition make it possible to detect an abnormality early. Breeding dogs must benefit from the screenings recommended by the breed club and the veterinarian.
