Health

# The Hungarian Greyhound's health

Hungary

The Hungarian Greyhound is overall a robust and resilient dog. Its overall health is good, with few fragilities regularly highlighted, even if its large size justifies reasonable orthopedic vigilance.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With good living conditions, a suitable diet and well-managed exercise, the Hungarian Greyhound generally lives between 12 and 14 years, which is a fine longevity for a large athletic dog.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

This breed is reputed to be robust and enduring. It tolerates physical activity well when it is gradually built up and properly recovered from, but as with many large dogs, joint prevention remains useful throughout life.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Monitoring focuses mainly on the musculoskeletal system, particularly in the young growing dog and in the very active adult. Regular veterinary follow-up, a sensible progression of exercise and maintaining a stable weight help to preserve its condition.

- Hip dysplasia: Vigilance is recommended in this large athletic dog, especially during growth and in individuals intended for sustained effort.
- Elbow dysplasia: This joint condition is cited among the points to monitor, even if the breed remains overall robust.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Hungarian Greyhound tolerates cold as well as heat moderately. Its short coat requires caution in harsh weather, even if an undercoat may appear in the cold season. In summer, exertion must be adjusted to the coolest hours.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This athletic dog must remain lean and muscular without excess body fat. A ration adjusted to the actual activity level, combined with regular monitoring of body shape and weight, helps to limit excess weight that penalizes joints and performance.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor growth and avoid overly intense exertion in the young dog.
- Maintain a stable weight to protect the joints.
- Have the musculoskeletal system checked regularly by the veterinarian.

Vaccination

## Hungarian Greyhound vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Hungarian Greyhound need? Like all dogs, Hungarian Greyhounds should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Hungarian Greyhound vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Hungarian Greyhound booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Hungarian Greyhound

A regular locomotor examination and hip screening are relevant, especially in subjects intended for sport, breeding or showing rapid growth. The veterinarian then adapts the follow-up according to age, activity and individual history.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
