Feeding

# Feeding your Hungarian Greyhound well

Hungary

The Hungarian Greyhound needs a quality diet, adapted to its age, its size and its activity level. Its ration must support its muscle mass, its endurance and the maintenance of a lean body condition.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Growth food adapted to the expected size, divided into three meals, without unnecessary calcium supplementation.
- Adult: Controlled ration in two meals, adjusted to ideal weight and actual activity.
- Senior: Digestible food, possibly less energy-dense, with joint and dental monitoring.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium complete kibble for large active dogs generally suits very well, provided that it is well tolerated and given in an appropriate quantity. Depending on the dog's profile, a home-prepared diet balanced by a professional can also be considered.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount depends mainly on weight, age, sterilization and exercise intensity. It must be reassessed regularly to avoid both underconditioning in very athletic dogs and overweight in less active subjects.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 25 - 27 kg | 401 - 550 g | 2 |
| 27 - 28 kg | 425 - 582 g | 2 |
| 28 - 30 kg | 448 - 614 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary transition must be gradual over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. Ideally, the proportion of the new food should be increased little by little while observing appetite, stools and general condition.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. After exertion or in hot weather, hydration deserves particular attention in this hardy and active dog.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats must remain measured and integrated into the daily ration. They are useful for training, provided that simple and digestible products are preferred, without excessive calories.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration each day rather than serving by volume.
- Avoid intense exertion just before and after the meal.
- Deduct training treats from the daily ration.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, it is necessary to avoid in particular chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, cooked bones and very fatty foods, as they can cause poisoning, severe digestive disorders or metabolic complications.
