Origins

## Where does it come from?

Outside its native Norway, the Halden Hound remains rather uncommon. The breed owes its name to its region of origin, that of Halden, in southern Norway, near the Swedish border. Its development is relatively recent compared to other hunting dogs and only began in a structured way at the beginning of the 20th century. The breed was obtained by crossing local varieties with other scenthounds originating from Germany, Sweden and Great Britain. Its first standard was established in the 1950s.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Halden Hound is a medium-sized hunting dog, with a body slightly longer than tall, solidly built without heaviness. Its head is lean and harmonious, its dark brown eyes express both calm and pride, and its medium-length ears fall forward. Its coat is short, dense, straight and rather harsh, with a thick undercoat. The coat is tricolour, white with black markings and shaded tan patches on the head and limbs.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

The Halden Hound is both energetic and affectionate. A good family companion when it has been sufficiently exercised, it remains above all a born hunter, hardy, fast and specially developed for hunting hare and various terrestrial game. It generally prefers to work alone with its owner rather than in a pack and needs to stay active to be well-balanced.

Playful

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

Very little inclined to live in an apartment, the Halden Hound needs space, freedom and long daily outings. He quickly gets bored if he cannot work or explore. A house with a well-fenced garden suits him better than a sedentary urban setting, provided that he is offered real physical and mental exercise.

Training

## Training and socialization

Like any hunting dog, the Halden Hound must be introduced to recall from an early age, as it can follow a trail with determination and let itself be distracted by small game. A gentle, consistent and firm education makes it a balanced family and hunting dog. Its taste for effort and work is an asset, but its independence requires consistency.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Halden Hound

The Halden Hound is a rare breed, which can influence its availability and the cost of acquisition depending on the bloodlines and origin. Beyond the purchase price, you must above all anticipate the expenses related to the upkeep of an active medium-sized dog.

Health

## Health at a glance

The Halden Hound is characterized by good overall endurance and rather robust health. Its short but double and dense coat helps it withstand the cold well, and no marked predisposition is particularly reported in the available references for the breed.
