Feeding

# Feeding your Greyhound well

United Kingdom

The Greyhound's diet must support lean musculature, good recovery and the metabolism of a large active sighthound. It benefits from being stable, highly digestible and adapted to its age, its weight and its actual level of exercise.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: A growth diet for a large dog, divided into several meals, helps support development without excess.
- Adult: Two meals per day are generally suitable, with a portion adjusted to ideal weight and the actual activity level.
- Senior: With age, the portion can be reduced or made more digestible in order to preserve muscle mass and overall comfort.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

High-quality kibble or a well-formulated complete wet diet generally suit the Greyhound, provided that digestible animal proteins are prioritized and that the energy intake is consistent with its activity. Dietary changes should remain gradual.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount varies according to sex, weight, age, sterilization and above all the actual intensity of exercise. It is preferable to split the ration into at least two meals and to adjust regularly according to the observed body condition.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 26 - 30 kg | 432 - 592 g | 2 |
| 30 - 34 kg | 488 - 668 g | 2 |
| 34 - 38 kg | 544 - 744 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary transition must be done gradually over several days in order to limit digestive upsets. A change that is too abrupt can upset a dog that is nevertheless very easy to feed when its diet is stable.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. After sustained exertion or in hot weather, hydration must be monitored closely, without letting the dog drink excessively all at once right after an intense sprint.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can be useful for training, but they must remain simple, easy to digest and given in small quantities so as not to unbalance the daily ration. In a sensitive dog that reacts to sweetness, a food reward often works very well.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Split the daily ration into at least 2 meals.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and just after meals.
- Regularly monitor body condition to maintain a lean silhouette.
- Keep fresh water available at all times.

### Never feed these foods

As with other dogs, chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, raw dough and cooked bones should be avoided, as they can cause poisoning or digestive accidents that are sometimes serious.
