Health

# The Goldendoodle's health

United States

The Goldendoodle is a generally healthy dog, but it may show certain hereditary or functional predispositions like many medium to large dogs. Responsible breeding, tested parents, and regular veterinary follow-up clearly reduce the risk of major problems.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its life expectancy is generally between 10 and 15 years, with variations depending on size, breeding quality, diet, weight and medical follow-up. An active lifestyle and good prevention help keep this dog in shape over time.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Goldendoodle is neither among the most fragile breeds nor among the most rustic. Its robustness depends greatly on the quality of the breeding dogs and the selection work carried out by the breeder, because crossbreeding does not automatically protect against all the conditions known in the parent breeds.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Particular attention must be paid to the locomotor system, digestion and the overall balance of weight. As the type of dog may vary from one line to another, it is useful to adapt veterinary monitoring to the actual size, activity level and family history of each individual.

- Hip dysplasia: A joint malformation that can cause pain, limping, and premature wear depending on severity.
- Elbow dysplasia: An orthopedic condition of growth or conformation that may limit locomotor comfort.
- Gastric torsion: A rare but serious digestive emergency, best prevented through careful management of meals and exercise.
- Epilepsy: Seizures may occur in some individuals and require appropriate veterinary follow-up.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Goldendoodle generally shows an average tolerance to cold as well as heat. Its coat can help it in cool weather, but it remains sensitive to high heat, especially during exertion. In summer, it is better to favor outings during the coolest hours and ensure shade, water, and rest.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This dog can be greedy and gain weight if the portions are too generous or if treats are given without moderation. Monitoring weight, appropriate portions and regular activity are important to limit joint and metabolic risks.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Regularly monitor weight and body shape to limit joint overload.
- Maintain the ears weekly to reduce the risk of moisture-related ear infections.
- Split meals and avoid intense exercise around feeding time.
- Plan regular veterinary follow-up and promptly report any lameness or neurological episode.

Vaccination

## Goldendoodle vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Goldendoodle need? Like all dogs, Goldendoodles should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Goldendoodle vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Goldendoodle booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Goldendoodle

It is relevant to request screening of the hips and elbows in breeding dogs, then to ensure standard veterinary follow-up throughout life. Depending on the dog's profile, the veterinarian may also advise particular vigilance regarding digestion, body condition and tolerance to exercise.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
