Feeding

# Feeding your Golden Retriever well

United Kingdom

The Golden Retriever needs a balanced, well-measured diet to support its muscle mass without promoting overweight. A complete, good-quality formula, given in two daily meals, generally suits this active and food-loving dog well. Quantities must always be adjusted according to the food’s energy density, activity level, and actual body condition.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: A large-breed puppy formula, divided into 3 to 4 meals, helps support steady growth without excess energy.
- Adult: Two meals per day with a weighed portion promote more stable digestion and limit snacking.
- Senior: A less caloric diet but rich in nutrients useful for maintaining muscle and joint health often becomes preferable.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium kibble for large-breed dogs generally works very well, with a formula adapted to age, activity level and any possible digestive sensitivity. Wet or mixed feeding can also be suitable if the intake remains balanced. During growth, a large-breed puppy formula helps support bone development in a more regular way.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily ration varies according to adult weight, the energy density of the food, sex, sterilization and activity level. It must always be read on the packaging and then adjusted according to the dog's actual body condition. In a Golden Retriever, monitoring quantities is important because the breed often tends to eat with enthusiasm.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 25 - 30 kg | 280 - 360 g | 2 |
| 30 - 35 kg | 330 - 420 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be gradual over about one week in order to limit digestive upsets. It is preferable to gradually increase the proportion of the new food while reducing the old one. In the event of loose stools or particular sensitivity, the transition may be even slower.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, especially after exercise, swimming or in hot weather. A dog fed kibble must drink enough each day to support its digestive and overall comfort. A decrease in consumption or unusual thirst deserves veterinary attention.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be included in the calculation of the total ration. They are very useful for the training of the Golden Retriever, which responds well to rewards, but excess quickly promotes weight gain. It is better to favor small portions that are easy to distribute.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration rather than measuring it by volume
- Split the ration into two daily meals
- Slightly reduce the quantities on less active days
- Limit rich treats and table scraps

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, grapes, onion, garlic, xylitol, alcohol, yeast dough and cooked bones are dangerous for dogs and can cause digestive, neurological, blood or kidney disorders that are sometimes serious. In case of suspected ingestion, you should contact a veterinarian quickly.
