Feeding

# Feeding your German Spitz well

Germany

The diet of the German Spitz must be adjusted to its variety, its age, its activity level and its tendency to gain weight. A good-quality complete food, properly portioned, helps support its energy, coat quality and overall health.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: More frequent meals and a growth diet adapted to the expected adult size are recommended.
- Adult: The ration must be stable, measured and adjusted according to activity, body condition and the variety.
- Senior: A digestible, well-tolerated and energy-controlled diet is preferred, with regular weight monitoring.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Premium complete kibble or a balanced home-prepared ration validated by a professional are suitable for the German Spitz. The chosen formula must support the skin, the coat and the maintenance of an ideal weight, with particular attention in the smallest individuals, who have a small stomach.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

Quantities must always be adapted to the dog’s actual size, which varies greatly depending on the variety of German Spitz. It is preferable to base it on ideal weight, daily activity and body condition rather than on the dog’s appetite alone.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2 - 5 kg | 45 - 95 g | 2 - 3 |
| 5 - 10 kg | 90 - 160 g | 2 |
| 10 - 20 kg | 150 - 280 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any dietary transition must be gradual over about one week in order to limit digestive upsets. The proportion of the new food is increased little by little while observing the stools, appetite and digestive comfort.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

The German Spitz must have permanent access to clean, fresh water. Hydration is particularly important in hot weather, during travel and after exercise.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can be useful for training the German Spitz, provided they remain moderate and are included in the daily ration. Simple, digestible and small-sized rewards are preferred, especially in the smaller sizes.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh portions rather than estimating them by eye.
- Limit treats to prevent weight gain.
- Split meals further for very small individuals if needed.
- Adjust the portion during shedding periods, reduced activity, or aging.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, onion, garlic, grapes, cooked bones, alcohol, xylitol and certain very fatty or salty foods are dangerous for the German Spitz. They can cause severe digestive, neurological, metabolic disorders or sometimes serious poisoning.
