Health

# The German Spaniel's health

Germany

The Chien d'Oysel is generally considered a hardy and robust dog. Its overall health is good, but like many medium-sized hunting breeds, it deserves careful monitoring of the musculoskeletal system as well as the ears and skin, especially in very active individuals or those often exposed to moisture and brush.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years, the Chien d'Oysel is in a good average for an active medium-sized dog. Longevity depends mainly on the quality of the breeding, joint care, weight control and a regular lifestyle with suitable exercise.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

A working breed selected for endurance and versatility, the Chien d'Oysel has a robust constitution. This sturdiness does not exempt it from standard veterinary follow-up, a sensible progression in exertion in the young dog, and particular vigilance regarding the joints and ears.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Regular monitoring is especially useful for dogs that are heavily physically exerted or living in humid, wooded environments. Weight control, inspection after outings, and thorough ear care help limit several common problems in hunting dogs.

- Hip dysplasia: A joint malformation that can hinder movement and promote osteoarthritis, especially in active dogs or those from lines that have not been sufficiently screened.
- Elbow dysplasia: A developmental disorder of the elbow that can cause pain, lameness, and progressive joint wear.
- Otitis: Drooping ears and working in wet environments can promote inflammation of the ear canal if maintenance is insufficient.
- Dermatitis and allergies: Skin irritations or allergic reactions may appear in some individuals, notably after repeated exposure to moisture or plants.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Chien d'Oysel copes rather well with the cold thanks to its undercoat and its protective coat. It tolerates moderate temperatures fairly well, but sustained efforts in high heat must be arranged with shade, water and outings shifted.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This dog is less prone to being overweight than some more sedentary breeds, but its weight must still be monitored if its activity level drops. A ration adjusted to energy expenditure, regular weigh-ins and limiting treats help preserve its joints and endurance.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Inspect the ears after outings in wet conditions or in brush.
- Maintain a stable weight to protect the joints.
- Have the gait monitored if lameness appears.
- Plan regular veterinary check-ups for the active dog.

Vaccination

## German Spaniel vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a German Spaniel need? Like all dogs, German Spaniels should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial German Spaniel vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult German Spaniel booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy German Spaniel

Screening of the hips and elbows is relevant in the selection and monitoring of breeding dogs. In the adult dog, regular veterinary check-ups must also focus on the ears, the skin and locomotor condition, particularly after sustained or repeated activity.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
