Feeding

# Feeding your German Shorthaired Pointer well

Germany

This large sporting dog needs a complete, digestible and sufficiently energy-rich diet, adapted to its age and activity level. The ration must support its muscle mass without promoting overly rapid growth in the puppy or excess weight in the adult.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Choose a food for large-breed puppies and split the ration into 3 meals during growth.
- Adult: Adjust the intake to the actual activity and split the ration into 2 meals spaced away from intense exertion.
- Senior: Reduce energy if activity decreases while maintaining quality proteins and monitoring body condition.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

Complete, quality kibble for active large dogs is suitable for most individuals. A home-prepared ration or a mixed diet can also be considered, provided it is formulated and monitored by a veterinarian in order to guarantee the balance of proteins, lipids, minerals and vitamins.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount depends on the energy density of the food, actual weight, age, neutering and physical activity. The manufacturer's indications serve as a starting point and must be adjusted according to changes in body condition.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 25 - 28 kg | 300 - 380 g | 2 |
| 29 - 32 kg | 340 - 430 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change of food must be gradual over about 7 to 10 days, by gradually increasing the proportion of the new food. A slower transition may be necessary for a dog with a sensitive digestive system.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times, especially after hunting, running or in hot weather. During long outings, regular breaks should be planned for drinking without letting the dog suddenly take in a very large amount of water right after intense exertion.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain occasional and be deducted from the daily ration. For training, small low-calorie pieces make it possible to multiply rewards without unbalancing energy intake.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration regularly rather than measuring it by eye.
- Give two daily meals rather than a single large meal.
- Avoid intense exertion just before and after the meal.
- Check weight and body condition every month.
- Deduct food treats from the daily ration.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic in toxic quantities, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty foods should be avoided. They can cause poisoning, kidney damage, digestive disorders, hypoglycemia or obstruction and require urgent veterinary advice in case of ingestion.
