Feeding

# Feeding your German Hound well

Germany

The German Brachet needs a complete, balanced diet adjusted to its age, weight and activity level. Its ration must change between hunting, training and rest periods.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Provide a complete diet suited to growth in several meals, without excess energy.
- Adult: Adjust the ration to the activity level, with a clear difference between working and resting periods.
- Senior: Monitor weight, mobility and digestion, then adjust energy intake with the veterinarian.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

High-quality kibble for an active dog may be suitable. A home-prepared ration based on meat, vegetables and starchy foods is also possible if it is formulated with a veterinarian in order to precisely cover nutritional needs.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount must be calculated based on the energy density of the food, the dog's weight and its actual expenditure. Body condition and changes in weight then make it possible to adjust the ration.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 15 kg | 225 - 275 g | 2 |
| 15 - 18 kg | 255 - 310 g | 2 |
| 18 - 20 kg | 280 - 345 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be gradual over about one week, by gradually increasing the proportion of the new food to limit digestive upsets.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Clean, fresh water must remain available at all times. During long outings or in hot weather, regular hydration breaks are essential.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can support recall and training, but their intake must remain moderate and be deducted from the daily ration to prevent weight gain.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration regularly rather than giving it by eye.
- Adjust the energy intake to hunting, training or rest days.
- Avoid a large meal just before or just after intense exertion.
- Check the weight and body condition every month.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic in toxic quantities, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts and cooked bones must be avoided, as they can cause poisoning, digestive disorders or internal injuries.
