Origins

## Where does it come from?

The two types of Braque Français originate from the South-West of France and the central Pyrenees. Formerly known as the « Braque du Pays », the Braque Français was somewhat neglected in favor of pointing dogs of British or Germanic origin. The Oysel dog is said to be its ancestor, itself at the origin of several types of braques in Europe. Enthusiasts set about preserving and improving the breed, by highlighting its hunting qualities and by bringing its performances closer to those of other pointing dogs.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Braque Français comes in two types: the Gascogne type, large in size, and the Pyrénées type, smaller. The male measures from 48 to 69 cm and weighs from 17 to 32 kg; the female measures from 47 to 68 cm and weighs from 16 to 30 kg. Its head is large and long without being heavy, with a skull almost flat or slightly domed, a large brown nose with open nostrils and drooping lips. Its well-open eyes express a frank look. Its moderately long ears, set at eye level, are slightly folded and rounded. The back is broad, straight and well supported, the loin short and muscular, the croup slightly sloping and the chest broad and long. The tail is well carried and generally docked. The coat is thick and dense, finer on the head and ears. The coat can be solid brown, brown and white, speckled, or brown with fawn markings above the eyes, on the lips and the limbs.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

Alert, active, attentive, intelligent and obedient, the Braque Français is very attached to its owner. Loyal, gentle, affectionate and sensitive, it is both an excellent pointing dog and a pleasant companion on a daily basis. It is delicate with children, generally appreciates other dogs and other animals, and likes working or going for walks just as much as staying close to its owner.

Affectionate Intelligent Easy to train Sociable Protective

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

The Braque Français needs many daily outings and plenty of exercise. Walks in the countryside or in town can be complemented by more sporty activities such as jogging or cycling. He appreciates wide open spaces where he can move around freely and does not tolerate solitude well: the regular presence of his owner or his family is essential to his balance.

Training

## Training and socialization

The Braque Français is among the easiest dogs to train thanks to its attentiveness, intelligence, gentleness and willingness to please. A consistent and respectful method suits its sensitivity, while excessive scolding should be avoided. Socialization must begin from the youngest age and the owner's expectations must be stated clearly.

Budget

## Price and budget for the French Pointer

The purchase price varies notably depending on the breeder, the bloodline, the pedigree and the health guarantees. The annual maintenance budget is between 1,400 and 1,500 euros.

Health

## Health at a glance

The Braque Français is rather robust and generally enjoys solid health. Particular vigilance remains necessary in view of its predisposition to gastric dilatation-volvulus.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

Its diet must be balanced and adapted to its age, its weight and its activity level. A homemade ration made up of raw meat, starchy foods such as rice or pasta and fresh vegetables is recommended.
