Origins

## Where does it come from?

The French Bulldog appears in the 19th century, after the ban on dog fighting in England in 1835. It is said to have resulted from the crossing between the Toy Bulldog and the Doguin, then established in France, notably in Paris around the Abattoirs de la Villette, where these small bulldog-type dogs become very popular with craftsmen and city dwellers. The name French Bulldog becomes established around 1880, and the breed will then be recognized by the FCI under number 101, in group 9, with official recognition dating back to 1954.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The French Bulldog is a small compact molosser, short-legged, muscular and well built, measuring about 29 to 35 cm for 7 to 14 kg depending on sex. Its head is broad, its muzzle very short, its ears upright like a bat and its chest well open. The coat is short, close-cropped, tight and smooth. The most classic coat colors are fawn, dark-charcoal brindle with shades ranging from red to café au lait, as well as white and brindle.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

Very cheerful, gentle, playful and affectionate, the French Bulldog is above all a companion dog very attached to its owner. It readily seeks human closeness, enjoys family life and is generally pleasant with children. Well socialized, it shows good general sociability and often welcomes strangers without excessive mistrust. Its tender temperament and moderate exercise needs also allow it to be suitable for available elderly people.

Affectionate Intelligent Sociable

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, he likes to live as close as possible to his humans, alternating short phases of play, rest and regular walks. His need for exercise is low to moderate: he enjoys daily outings, but tolerates intense effort, jogging, heat and swimming poorly. Not much of a barker and very comfortable indoors, he is one of the breeds best suited to apartment living, provided he is not left alone for too long.

Training

## Training and socialization

Training is generally good if it starts early and remains consistent, gentle and motivating. It is useful to teach him early house training, the basics of obedience and being alone, because this dog, very close to his humans, can cope poorly with absences. Early socialization also helps to channel a possible jealous or possessive streak and to make him a well-balanced companion. Short and regular sessions often give the best results.

Budget

## Price and budget for the French Bulldog

The purchase price varies depending on the seriousness of the breeding kennel, the pedigree, the quality of the breeding dogs and above all the level of health selection. For this breed, it is essential to prioritize functional breathing, morphological balance and the breeder’s transparency rather than a fashionable appearance or a highlighted color.

Health

## Health at a glance

The French Bulldog is an endearing but medically fragile breed. Its brachycephalic morphology exposes it to breathing difficulties, low heat tolerance and a risk of heatstroke. You must also monitor the back, eyes, skin, weight and certain orthopedic disorders. The quality of selection, well-controlled weight and an adapted lifestyle have a direct effect on its comfort and longevity.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

The French Bulldog needs a balanced, digestible and well-measured diet, as the breed can combine a tendency to be overweight and digestive sensitivity. The quality of the ingredients, the regularity of meals and maintaining an ideal weight matter as much as the quantity served.

## Fun facts and popularity

Also called French Bulldog in some sources, this small companion with bat ears has become one of the most recognizable French canine silhouettes. Its rise is closely linked to working-class Paris at the end of the 19th century, where it won over households with its funny expression, practical size, and marked taste for human company.
