Health

# The Eurohound's health

Sweden

The Eurohound is generally a robust dog, well suited to an active life and sustained physical exertion. As with other sporting dogs from working lines, its overall condition depends greatly on the quality of training, diet, recovery, and veterinary follow-up.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its life expectancy is generally between 12 and 15 years, which is good longevity for a medium-sized sporting dog. Suitable physical activity, a quality diet and regular locomotor monitoring help to maintain its fitness over the long term.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The breed is considered rather robust. The Eurohound generally tolerates physical work well and is not particularly afraid of difficult weather conditions, even if high heat requires caution with this dog selected for exertion.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Particular vigilance must be paid to the locomotor system, especially in dogs intensively used for pulling or racing. Monitoring weight, musculature, limb alignment, and recovery after exertion helps to limit risks and to detect early any possible discomfort.

- Hip dysplasia: Joint monitoring is recommended in this athletic dog, especially if lameness, stiffness, or a decrease in performance appear.
- Elbow dysplasia: This condition can affect locomotor comfort and warrants early management in active or intensively trained subjects.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Eurohound handles cold properly in an activity context, but it may be less comfortable in hot weather, especially during intense exertion. Sporting outings must be adapted to the temperature, with particular attention to hydration and the coolest times.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This dog expends a lot of energy when it is really working, but it can lose its balance if its activity level drops without adapting the ration. Regular monitoring of its body shape and muscle mass is recommended to adjust food intake to its pace of life.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor any limping or stiffness after exercise
- Maintain a stable weight and good musculature
- Adapt the intensity of sport to the dog's age and condition

Vaccination

## Eurohound vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Eurohound need? Like all dogs, Eurohounds should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Eurohound vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Eurohound booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Eurohound

An orthopedic examination and veterinary follow-up focused on the joints are relevant, especially for subjects intended for sport or breeding. In case of lameness, stiffness or decreased performance, an early assessment is preferable.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
