Health

# The Eurasier's health

Germany

The Eurasier is an overall well-balanced dog, but like many medium to large breeds, it requires rigorous health monitoring. Certain orthopedic, endocrine, neurological and ocular conditions are described in the breed. Its dense coat protects it well from the cold, but its lifestyle, growth and weight must be monitored carefully.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

The Eurasier lives on average between 11 and 13 years. This longevity is decent for a dog of this size and depends a lot on the quality of breeding, maintaining an ideal weight, appropriate activity, and veterinary follow-up throughout life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Eurasier shows average to good robustness when selection is serious and breeding dogs are tested. Its sensitivity concerns not only behavior, but also growth management and the prevention of certain hereditary diseases. A stable lifestyle, measured exercise in the young dog and good general hygiene contribute to its good condition over time.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Vigilance must mainly focus on the musculoskeletal system, certain endocrine disorders, some ocular conditions and, more rarely, neurological abnormalities. Choosing a reputable breeder and following the recommended health checks play a major role in prevention and early detection.

- Hip dysplasia: Orthopedic condition to monitor in this medium-to-large dog, with a potential impact on mobility and comfort.
- Elbow dysplasia: Joint abnormality that can lead to lameness, pain, and premature wear of the joint.
- Hypothyroidism: Hormonal disorder that can result in fatigue, weight gain, decreased tone, and deterioration of coat quality.
- Dandy-Walker malformation: Rare but serious neurological abnormality described in the breed and requiring particular vigilance in selection.
- Entropion and ectropion: Eyelid conditions that can irritate the eye and warrant a veterinary check if tearing or discomfort occurs.
- Patellar luxation: Abnormal displacement of the kneecap, more occasional, which can cause discomfort or lameness.
- Gastric torsion: Serious digestive emergency with increased risk in medium-to-large dogs, especially after a meal followed by exertion.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Thanks to its dense double coat, the Eurasier tolerates cold and bad weather well. On the other hand, it copes less well with high heat and must have shade, fresh water and activities shifted in summer. Intense exertion in a hot environment should be limited.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Eurasier must stay lean and well muscled to protect its joints. A measured diet, controlled treats and regular activity help prevent weight gain, especially after sterilization or in less active dogs. Simple monitoring of the silhouette and the weight curve is useful all year round.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Choose a breeder who tests the hips and elbows of breeding dogs.
- Monitor growth and avoid excessive exertion in the young dog.
- Maintain a healthy weight to protect the joints.
- Consult promptly in case of lameness, unusual fatigue or eye disorders.

Vaccination

## Eurasier vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Eurasier need? Like all dogs, Eurasiers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Eurasier vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Eurasier booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Eurasier

Hip and elbow screenings are particularly important in the breed. Careful veterinary follow-up can also lead to monitoring the thyroid and eyes depending on the lines and family history. Before adoption, it is relevant to ask about the tests carried out on the parents.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
