Feeding

# Feeding your Entlebucher Mountain Dog well

Switzerland

Its diet must cover the needs of a very active medium-sized dog while maintaining a lean silhouette. The ration is chosen according to age, weight, body condition, exercise level and neutering, then adjusted to the dog's actual development.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Offer a growth formula for a medium-sized dog, divided into three meals, without overfeeding in order to protect the joints.
- Adult: Divide the ration into two meals and adjust it to the activity level, sterilization and body condition.
- Senior: Choose an easily digestible diet, moderately energy-dense and adapted to changes in weight, mobility and kidney function.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

A complete, good-quality diet, formulated for a medium-sized and active dog, is suitable for the adult. For the puppy, a growth formula adapted to its size promotes steady development without excess energy. A home-prepared ration can be considered only if it is calculated and balanced with a veterinarian.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The daily amount depends strongly on the energy density of the food and on activity. It is advisable to follow the manufacturer's table, to check body condition every two to four weeks and to gradually adjust the ration.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 18 - 21 kg | 250 - 320 g | 2 |
| 22 - 25 kg | 290 - 370 g | 2 |
| 26 - 28 kg | 330 - 420 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change in diet must be carried out gradually over about seven days, increasing each day the proportion of the new food. A slower transition is preferable in the event of loose stools or digestive sensitivity.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Fresh, clean water must remain available at all times. During long walks, training sessions and in hot weather, regular breaks should be offered without letting the dog swallow a very large quantity all at once after intense exertion.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats can be used for training, but they must remain small and be deducted from the daily ration. Suitable, low-calorie pieces limit weight gain, while cooked bones and very fatty products should be avoided.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Weigh the ration rather than using an approximate measure.
- Split the daily food into two meals in adulthood.
- Avoid intense exercise just before and after the meal.
- Deduct treats from the daily energy intake.
- Reassess the ration when activity or weight changes.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, onion, garlic in toxic quantities, xylitol, alcohol, caffeine, macadamia nuts, cooked bones and very fatty or very salty foods are dangerous for the dog and can cause poisoning, digestive disorders, neurological damage or internal injuries.
