Health

# The Dandie Dinmont Terrier's health

Great Britain

Rustic and generally robust, the Dandie-Dinmont Terrier copes rather well with bad weather thanks to its double coat. Like many low and elongated dogs, it nevertheless deserves special attention for its back, its joints and certain breed predispositions. Regular veterinary monitoring, good weight management and moderate activity help to preserve its health.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its life expectancy is generally between 11 and 13 years. With an appropriate diet, a stable weight and early monitoring of locomotor problems, many individuals can maintain a good quality of life for many years.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The Dandie-Dinmont-Terrier is considered a fairly sturdy small dog. Its hardiness must not, however, make one forget its particular morphology, which requires avoiding sudden and repeated efforts, notably jumps or frequent stairs.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Vigilance mainly concerns the musculoskeletal system and a few conditions identified in the breed. The goal is not to worry constantly, but to act early in case of lameness, back pain, stiffness, or a change in behavior.

- Hyperadrenocorticism: Cushing's disease corresponds to an overproduction of cortisol that can lead to fatigue, increased drinking, changes in the coat, and metabolic disorders.
- Hip dysplasia: This joint abnormality can cause pain, stiffness, and locomotor discomfort, with variable expression depending on the individual.
- Herniated disc: Its elongated morphology exposes it to back pain and neurological disorders that require prompt management.
- Patellar luxation: This knee condition can manifest as intermittent lameness or instability of gait.
- Difficult birth: In the female, giving birth may sometimes require increased monitoring, or even a cesarean section.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Thanks to its double coat, the Dandie-Dinmont Terrier is rather well protected against cold and humidity. It also tolerates milder temperatures fairly well, but as with any dog it is advisable to avoid intense outings during the hottest hours and to leave it constant access to water.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Weight gain is not its main weakness, but it remains essential to maintain a slim figure to protect its back and joints. Treats must remain measured and portions adjusted according to age, activity and neutering.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Maintain a stable weight to limit strain on the back and joints.
- Consult promptly in case of limping, back pain, or difficulty moving.
- Limit repeated jumping and frequent stairs on a daily basis.
- Schedule regular veterinary follow-up with locomotor check-up.

Vaccination

## Dandie Dinmont Terrier vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Dandie Dinmont Terrier need? Like all dogs, Dandie Dinmont Terriers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Dandie Dinmont Terrier vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Dandie Dinmont Terrier booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Dandie Dinmont Terrier

An orthopedic examination, locomotor monitoring and a regular assessment of the general condition are useful in this breed. In the event of a breeding project, careful selection work and the veterinarian's opinion also help to limit the transmission of certain predispositions.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
