Health

# The Dachshund's health

Germany

The Teckel is generally a hardy dog, but its elongated morphology requires particular vigilance regarding the back. Prevention involves weight control, appropriate exercise and avoiding repeated efforts that place heavy strain on the spine.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

When kept at a proper weight, well monitored and protected from traumatic strain on the back, the Dachshund can commonly live between 12 and 14 years. The regularity of its lifestyle hygiene counts a lot in its longevity.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

The breed shows an overall robustness that is correct, without being among the most solid due to its spinal sensitivity. An adapted lifestyle nevertheless makes it possible to limit part of the risks linked to its conformation.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

The priority is to protect the spine and prevent excess weight, two points closely linked in this breed. It is also necessary to remain attentive to the eyes, the joints and to certain endocrine or neurological conditions mentioned in the Dachshund.

- Herniated disc: Major condition of the breed, favored by the elongated morphology and potentially causing pain, weakness, or locomotor disorders.
- Disc disease: Wear or damage to the intervertebral discs requiring active prevention through weight control and avoidance of risky exertion.
- Progressive retinal atrophy: Degenerative eye disease that can lead to a progressive decline in vision.
- Obesity: Weight gain increases strain on the back and must be prevented through a strict ration and regular activity.
- Patellar luxation: Possible orthopedic problem in some individuals, responsible for intermittent or persistent lameness.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Teckel tolerates moderate heat fairly well but does not cope well with intense cold, especially depending on size and coat variety. In winter, outings must be adapted and the smallest or smooth-haired individuals may need additional protection.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The Dachshund is predisposed to being overweight, which greatly increases the strain on its back. A measured ration, limited treats and daily walks are essential to maintain a stable figure.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Maintain a stable weight all year round.
- Limit jumping off the sofa or the bed.
- Adapt activity without violent strain on the back.
- Consult promptly in case of pain or weakness in the limbs.

Vaccination

## Dachshund vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Dachshund need? Like all dogs, Dachshunds should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Dachshund vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Dachshund booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Dachshund

Regular veterinary follow-up with attention paid to the eyes, the kneecaps and the general check-up is relevant for the Dachshund. Depending on the history and the dog’s profile, the veterinarian may also recommend additional check-ups.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder
