Health

# The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog's health

Slovakia

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is overall a robust breed, close to the wolf in its physical endurance and hardiness. Like many medium to large-sized dogs, it nevertheless remains exposed to certain orthopedic conditions and to a few eye problems that justify serious monitoring by an attentive breeder and veterinarian.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy of around 12 to 15 years, this breed can accompany for a long time a family well prepared for its needs. Its longevity depends a lot on the quality of the breeding, on sensible exercise during growth, on diet and on veterinary follow-up.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its constitution is strong and its overall endurance is good, particularly in the face of cold and prolonged effort. This natural robustness does not exempt from a serious selection of breeding stock nor from vigilance regarding the locomotor system and the eyes.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Prevention involves weight control, activity adapted to age, and rigorous screening for hereditary conditions. In this very active dog, it is particularly important to protect the joints during growth and to monitor early for any abnormality in locomotion or vision.

- Hip dysplasia: Joint condition that may appear in adulthood and is promoted by growth or insufficiently rigorous selection.
- Elbow dysplasia: Orthopedic disorder to monitor in the lines concerned, with possible impact on locomotion and quality of life.
- Degenerative myelopathy: Hereditary neurological disease that warrants screening of breeding dogs and vigilance regarding bloodlines.
- Eye conditions: The breed may notably present progressive retinal atrophy, cataract, or glaucoma.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog tolerates cold well thanks to its dense undercoat and its protective coat. On the other hand, it tolerates high heat less well and must have shade, fresh water and exercise shifted to the coolest hours in summer.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

The tendency to become overweight is not the most pronounced in the breed, but a poorly adjusted energy intake can quickly harm the joints and physical performance. A ration adapted to its actual activity, combined with monitoring of its body shape, helps preserve its athletic condition.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Request hip, elbow, eye and degenerative myelopathy screenings before adoption.
- Moderate exertion and jumping throughout the entire growth period.
- Regularly monitor locomotion, vision and body condition.
- Maintain regular veterinary follow-up despite the generally good hardiness.

Vaccination

## Czechoslovakian Wolfdog vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog need? Like all dogs, Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Czechoslovakian Wolfdog vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Czechoslovakian Wolfdog booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Czechoslovakian Wolfdog

Screenings of the hips, elbows, degenerative myelopathy and eyes are particularly relevant before breeding and useful in monitoring bloodlines. When adopting, it is recommended to ask breeders for the results of these examinations.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
