Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is a breed created in 1955 in the former Czechoslovakia from crosses between the German Shepherd and the Carpathian wolf. The project aimed to combine the resistance, endurance and hardiness of the wolf with the working abilities of the domestic dog. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1982 and remains today one of the very few wolfdog breeds officially recognized.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog presents a rectangular silhouette, solid and harmonious, with a dry bone structure and well-defined musculature. Its head in the shape of an obtuse cone, its erect triangular ears, its oblique amber eyes and its light mask give it an expression very close to that of the wolf. Its straight coat, lying close, becomes particularly dense in the cold season thanks to an abundant undercoat. The coat ranges from yellow-gray to silver-gray.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

It is a courageous, lively dog, very hardy and strongly attached to its social group. It is loyal to its owner, naturally wary of strangers and more deterrent than offensive. Its temperament is strong, sensitive and independent, which requires a consistent and respectful relationship. It is not suitable for a beginner owner.

Playful Intelligent Protective

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog needs freedom of movement, regular activities and a stimulating living environment. It copes poorly with a sedentary life and is not suited to apartment living. Well socialized, it can be playful with children, but its hunting instinct, its vigilance and its reserve in the face of novelty require real day-to-day management.

Training

## Training and socialization

His training must begin very early, with thorough socialization and consistent rules. This dog understands quickly, but he does not obey mechanically and can get bored if the exercises do not make sense in his eyes. Brutal methods are counter-productive. An experienced, patient and structured owner gets better results with progressive and motivating work.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog

The purchase price varies mainly depending on the quality of the breeding, the health tests carried out, the lineage, the reputation of the breeding dogs and the availability of the breed. For a dog as demanding as this, it is essential to prioritize the seriousness of the selection rather than the price alone.

Health

## Health at a glance

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is overall a robust breed, close to the wolf in its physical endurance and hardiness. Like many medium to large-sized dogs, it nevertheless remains exposed to certain orthopedic conditions and to a few eye problems that justify serious monitoring by an attentive breeder and veterinarian.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog needs good-quality food, sufficiently rich to support its activity without promoting excess weight. Portions must be adjusted according to age, exercise level, season and body condition.

## Fun facts and popularity

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is often mistaken for a wolf because of its morphology, its gaze and its gait. Despite this spectacular appearance, it is indeed a recognized domestic breed. Its remarkable endurance allows it to excel in disciplines such as tracking, canicross or long sporty hikes.
