Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Cursinu is an ancient Corsican country dog present on the island since at least the 16th century. Used both for herding livestock, guarding sheepfolds and properties, hunting and sometimes more warlike utilitarian functions, it long accompanied Corsican rural life. The decline of pastoralism and the search for highly specialized dogs almost made it disappear, before a preservation effort undertaken from 1984 by enthusiasts and supported locally revived the breed. The Société Centrale Canine recognized it in 2003, then the French breed studbook was opened in 2012.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Cursinu is a dog of the lupoid type, of medium size, straight and muscular without heaviness. Its head has a rather flat skull, pronounced brow ridges, a straight or slightly convex muzzle and oval hazel-colored eyes. The ears are triangular, of medium length and set high. The body is solid with a slightly sloping croup, and the tail reaches at least the hock. The coat is well furnished, short or medium-long, sometimes with fringes. The most common coat color is brindle fawn, with other shades of fawn possible and sometimes a few white markings on the extremities or on the chest.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

The Cursinu is a loyal, proud, courageous and balanced dog. Very attached to its owner and its close circle, it often remains wary of strangers, which makes it a very good guard dog. It is also a lively, intelligent dog capable of taking initiative. Well socialized when young, it can live properly with the other animals in the household, but its hunting instinct and its independence remain very present.

Affectionate Playful Intelligent Easy to train Sociable Protective

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, the Cursinu needs movement, freedom and concrete occupations. He enjoys long outings in nature, scent activities, running and tasks that give him a role. A rural life or a house with an outdoor area suits him better than an apartment, unless his physical and mental needs are really taken seriously. Once his needs are met, he knows how to become calm again at home and willingly seeks the closeness of his family.

Training

## Training and socialization

The education of the Cursinu must be positive, consistent and respectful. A sensitive and intelligent dog, it responds poorly to physical constraint or to a relationship of force. It needs a clear framework, early socialization and exercises that develop recall, natural tracking and self-control. In the hands of an active, patient and fair owner, it learns well and willingly commits to utilitarian or sporting activities.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Cursinu

The Cursinu remains a rare breed, and its purchase price depends mainly on the seriousness of the breeding, genealogical tracking, the socialization of the puppies and the selection work carried out on temperament and aptitudes. It is better to favor a breeder who is transparent about origins and breeding conditions.

Health

## Health at a glance

The Cursinu is overall a hardy and robust dog, with no major predisposition widely highlighted in the available references. Its main point of vigilance mainly concerns maintaining good physical condition and a weight suited to its level of activity.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

The Cursinu benefits from a simple, healthy and well-balanced diet. It is not known to be difficult, but its diet must remain adapted to its size, its activity level and its body condition to avoid any unnecessary weight gain.

## Fun facts and popularity

The Cursinu is today considered a true marker of Corsican identity and a living heritage of the island. Its modern preservation owes much to a few enthusiasts who revived the breed in the mid-1980s. Versatile, it is still found in hunting, in herding work, in blood tracking, in truffle hunting or in disciplines such as canicross and mantrailing.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions about the Cursinu

Answers to common questions from future owners before their new companion arrives.
