Health

# The Croatian Sheepdog's health

Croatia

The Croatian Sheepdog is generally robust and well protected against cold and bad weather thanks to its double, dense coat. The breed does not have a long list of known predispositions, but it deserves standard veterinary follow-up and vigilance adapted to its size and its active lifestyle.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With a life expectancy generally between 12 and 14 years, this breed can accompany an active family for a long time if it benefits from a stable lifestyle, an appropriate diet and regular veterinary follow-up.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Rustic by nature, the Croatian Sheepdog copes well with outdoor living and cool weather conditions. Its sturdiness does not, however, exempt it from regular care, a controlled weight and physical activity consistent with its energy level.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Even though the breed is reputed to be robust, monitoring of the joints, digestion and body condition remains recommended. As with any active dog, prevention, observation of behavior and regular veterinary check-ups play an essential role.

- Patellar luxation: an orthopedic condition that can cause discomfort, intermittent lameness, or joint pain depending on its severity.
- Gastric torsion: a digestive emergency with a higher risk in dogs that eat too quickly or engage in intense activity around mealtimes.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Thanks to its dense coat and protective undercoat, the Croatian Sheepdog tolerates cold and bad weather well. On the other hand, strong heat suits it less well and requires limiting exertion to the cooler hours, with permanent access to shade and water.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This breed has a high activity level, but a balance between ration, treats and exercise remains important to avoid gradual weight gain. A dog that is too sedentary or overfed quickly loses joint comfort and endurance.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Monitor gait and consult if there is lameness or joint discomfort.
- Maintain a stable weight to protect the joints and endurance.
- Schedule regular veterinary check-ups, at least annually.
- Limit exertion around meals to reduce digestive risk.

Vaccination

## Croatian Sheepdog vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Croatian Sheepdog need? Like all dogs, Croatian Sheepdogs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Croatian Sheepdog vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Croatian Sheepdog booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Croatian Sheepdog

An annual clinical examination, orthopedic monitoring in case of locomotor discomfort and particular attention to digestive signs are good basics. The veterinarian then adapts the check-ups to the dog's age, lifestyle and any possible medical history.
