- More functional than a very typey bulldog: Its selection aims for better breathing ease and a more natural aptitude for effort.
- Reasonable maintenance: Its short coat and limited grooming needs make life easier for many households.

- May gain weight: His greediness and compact build require real dietary discipline.
- Powerful despite his calm: His physical strength requires early and consistent training to avoid excesses.
- Sensitive to heat: High temperatures require adapting outings and avoiding intense exertion.

Who is it for?

Ideal for

- Families with plenty of time: He enjoys home life and integrates well when those around him devote time and activities to him.
- Moderately active owners: He likes walking, playing, and enjoying regular outings without requiring the intensity of a large working dog.
- Adopters seeking a stable molossoid: His calm and sociable nature appeals to those who want a powerful yet balanced dog.

Not recommended for

- People who are often absent: Even though he tolerates a bit of solitude, he needs presence, attention, and regular interactions.
- Households that neglect training: Without a clear framework, his strength and energy can become difficult to manage on a daily basis.
- Owners who pay little attention to weight: An overly rich diet and insufficient outings quickly promote weight gain.

Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Continental Bulldog is a recent breed born in Switzerland under the impetus of breeder Imelda Angehrn. Passionate about the English Bulldog, she sought to preserve its stable and affectionate temperament while selecting dogs more suited to exertion and less exposed to respiratory difficulties. The selection program resulted in the early 2000s in a type first named Old Type Pickwick Bulldog, then renamed Continental Bulldog in 2004 by the Swiss Canine Society. The breed was then recognized in France in 2014 and benefits from provisional recognition by the FCI.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Continental Bulldog is a molossoid-type dog, compact, powerful and athletic, without excessive heaviness. Its head appears square with lightly marked wrinkles and a well-defined stop. Its coat is short, shiny, close-fitting and smooth, with a fine undercoat that may be discreet. The ears are set high, rose or button, the eyes round and well separated, and the tail is carried low at rest. The overall impression is of a solid, harmonious dog that is more functional than a very typey bulldog.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

Calm, attentive and self-confident, the Continental Bulldog is deeply attached to its family. It combines the serenity of the English Bulldog with more energy and availability for activity. Sociable without being submissive, it is generally well-balanced, not very fearful and able to live with children and other animals when introductions and training are properly carried out.

Affectionate Playful Sociable Protective

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

The Continental Bulldog knows how to appreciate the comfort of the home, but it is not a purely couch-potato dog. It likes to share calm moments as well as brisk walks, hikes or games. Its stable temperament helps it adapt to life in an apartment as well as in a house, provided it receives attention, regular outings and a consistent framework that channels its strength.

Training

## Training and socialization

His training must begin early, with consistency, calm and clear rules. Intelligent and strong-willed, he responds well to firm but fair handling, without brutality. Early socialization, learning self-control and positive reinforcement are important to make this powerful dog a reliable companion, pleasant in the city as well as in the family.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Continental Bulldog

The price of a Continental Bulldog varies depending on the lineage, the seriousness of the breeding, the screenings and the socialization. The maintenance budget (food, veterinary, training) often exceeds the purchase price over time.
