Health

# The Clumber Spaniel's health

United Kingdom

The Clumber-Spaniel is generally resilient and its coat protects it well from cold and bad weather. Its heavy build nevertheless exposes it to several osteoarticular disorders, while females may encounter difficulties during whelping. Serious selection, maintaining an appropriate weight and regular but moderate activity are essential.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

With an appropriate lifestyle, regular veterinary monitoring and good weight control, it generally lives between 10 and 12 years.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its resistance to cold and bad weather is good thanks to its abundant coat, but its overall robustness remains average due to its mass, the vulnerability of its joints and certain hereditary predispositions.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Careful veterinary monitoring is recommended from the growth stage onward, particularly for the locomotor system. The breeder must also inform future owners of the reproductive risks encountered in certain females.

- Incomplete ossification of the humeral condyle: This elbow abnormality can cause pain, lameness and risk of fracture, and requires a veterinary evaluation.
- Hip dysplasia: Poor congruence of the joint can promote pain and osteoarthritis, especially in cases of overweight.
- Elbow conditions: The breed’s heavy build can be accompanied by pain or elbow joint disorders.
- Uterine inertia and difficult whelping: Some females may require veterinary assistance, or even a caesarean section, during whelping.
- Otitis: Large drooping ears retain moisture and require appropriate monitoring and cleaning.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Clumber Spaniel tolerates cold and humidity well thanks to its dense coat. It tolerates high heat less well: walks must then be organized during cool hours, with shade, water and without sustained effort.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Its tendency to become overweight requires weighing portions, limiting treats and regularly monitoring its body shape. Exercise must remain daily but moderate, favoring walking and scent activities rather than jumps or prolonged runs.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the hips and elbows checked during growth and before breeding.
- Maintain an ideal weight to relieve the joints.
- Inspect and clean the drooping ears regularly.
- Brush the coat every day, especially during shedding periods.
- Limit exertion and favor cooler hours in hot weather.

Vaccination

## Clumber Spaniel vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Clumber Spaniel need? Like all dogs, Clumber Spaniels should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Clumber Spaniel vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Clumber Spaniel booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Clumber Spaniel

Before breeding, it is advisable to have the hips, elbows and more broadly the locomotor system assessed. Regular veterinary examinations of the eyes, ears and body condition complete this monitoring. In the female intended for breeding, the risk of difficult whelping must be anticipated with the veterinarian.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
