Health

# The Chinese Crested Dog's health

China

Despite a fairly good life expectancy, the Chinese Crested Dog remains vulnerable due to its very fine or absent coat. The breed is mainly predisposed to dermatological problems and requires careful protection against cold, humidity and the sun.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its life expectancy is generally between 13 and 15 years.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its robustness is limited by the fineness or absence of coat, which directly exposes its skin to external aggressions. Regular attention nevertheless makes it possible to support its good longevity.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Particular monitoring of the skin is necessary, because the breed has dermatological predispositions and reacts strongly to climatic aggressions.

- Allergic or atopic dermatitis: Skin inflammation can cause itching and irritation and requires monitoring of the skin.
- Solar dermatitis: Skin that is poorly protected by the coat is particularly sensitive to the effects of the sun.
- Sunburn: Sun exposure can burn bare areas and must be strictly controlled.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

He does not tolerate cold and humidity well, but also sun exposure. His life must therefore take place mainly indoors, with suitable protection during outings.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Its tendency to gain weight is moderate. Its weight and body condition must be monitored taking into account its small size and its moderate activity level.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Clean and moisturize the skin regularly.
- Protect the dog from cold and humidity.
- Limit sun exposure likely to irritate the skin.
- Ensure a daily walk suited to its small size.

Vaccination

## Chinese Crested Dog vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Chinese Crested Dog need? Like all dogs, Chinese Crested Dogs should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Chinese Crested Dog vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Chinese Crested Dog booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Chinese Crested Dog

Before breeding, request eye screenings (including PRA), patellar status and a dental examination. Regular dermatological monitoring is useful in hairless subjects. Identification, vaccines and an annual check-up remain essential.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
