Feeding

# Feeding your Chinese Crested Dog well

China

The Chinese Crested Dog is a small dog with a sometimes lively metabolism, especially in Hairless subjects who lose more heat. It needs a complete, digestible and sufficiently energy-rich diet, without excess treats.

A menu for every age

## Their needs change as they grow

- Puppy: Small dog growth food, divided into three or four meals, while monitoring teeth and digestion.
- Adult: Controlled ration, possibly a little more energy-dense for the Hairless in winter.
- Senior: Digestible food, close dental monitoring and adjustment if the skin or joints become more fragile.

Which food?

## Kibble, wet food, or homemade meals?

High-quality kibble for small dogs, possibly mixed with a wet ration, is well suited. Hairless individuals may have dry skin: a food that supports the skin barrier is a plus.

Portion sizes

## How much should you feed?

The ration of an adult of 4 to 6 kg is often around 70 to 120 g of kibble per day depending on the density of the food, the activity and whether it is a Hairless or a Powder-Puff.

| Weight | Daily amount | Meals per day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 3 - 4 kg | 60 - 90 g | 2 |
| 4 - 5 kg | 80 - 110 g | 2 |
| 5 - 6 kg | 95 - 130 g | 2 |

Changing food

## How to switch foods successfully

Any change of food must be gradual over seven to ten days. In this small size, an abrupt change easily promotes diarrhea or refusal.

Hydration

## Don't overlook water

Fresh water must remain available at all times. Needs increase in hot weather, after exertion and in hairless subjects.

A little extra

## Treats in moderation

Treats should remain small and low in calories, ideally used for training. They must not exceed 10% of the daily ration.

Good habits

## Make mealtimes count

- Hairless dogs expend more energy to keep warm: adjust the ration in winter.
- Splitting meals limits digestive troubles in this small size.
- Avoid fatty treats that irritate the skin and weight.

### Never feed these foods

Chocolate, grapes, xylitol, onion, garlic, alcohol, caffeine, cooked bones and very fatty leftovers are dangerous. In case of ingestion, contact a veterinarian without delay.
