Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan originates from Wales, in the United Kingdom, where it was long used as a herding dog and farm guardian. An old corgi variety, it differs from the Pembroke by a longer and more robust build, as well as by a probable influence of basset-type dogs in its development. The English Kennel Club recognized the Cardigan and the Pembroke as two distinct breeds in 1934, and the FCI granted its definitive recognition to the Welsh Corgi Cardigan in 1963.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan is a dog low on legs, longer than tall, of solid and compact build. Its head resembles that of the fox, with erect ears, broad at the base and rounded at the tip. Its coat is double, straight, of short to medium length, with a dense undercoat, and its tail, well furnished, evokes that of the fox. All colours are accepted, with or without white markings, without dominance of white.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

Balanced, active and hardy, the Welsh Corgi Cardigan is an affectionate, intelligent companion and very attached to its home. It is neither fearful nor aggressive and retains real working abilities. Its docile temperament is accompanied by a certain vigilance and a good sense of observation, which makes it a pleasant and attentive family dog.

Affectionate Sociable

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan adapts fairly easily to different living environments, in the city as well as in the countryside, provided it benefits from regular outings. It appreciates family life, willingly takes part in everyday activities and knows how to remain calm when it is sufficiently stimulated. Its past as a herding dog can make it attentive to movements and fairly reactive to its environment, without being excessively noisy overall.

Training

## Training and socialization

The education of the Welsh Corgi Cardigan must be firm, consistent and always respectful. This dog likes to learn and readily seeks to please, but it can also show a bit of independence that requires consistency. Positive methods, clear rules and early socialization make it possible to obtain a companion that is comfortable in its paws and pleasant to live with.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Cardigan Welsh Corgi

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan remains a relatively little-known breed, which often influences its availability and purchase price. Choosing a reputable breeder, transparent about health and socialization, is crucial to secure the acquisition.

Health

## Health at a glance

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan is overall a rather robust breed, with good resistance to cold thanks to its double coat and an appreciable life expectancy. Like many breeds of ancient selection, it nevertheless has some hereditary predispositions that justify serious veterinary monitoring and rigorous breeding.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan needs a complete and well-balanced diet, adapted to its medium size, its activity level and its age. Good-quality food helps support its muscle mass, its double coat and the maintenance of a weight suited to its morphology.

Did you know?

## Fun facts and popularity

The word Corgi is generally linked to Old Welsh and refers, depending on interpretations, to the idea of a working dog or a small dog. The Cardigan is the variety of corgi traditionally considered the oldest. Its low silhouette, its fox tail and its large rounded ears give it a very recognizable expression among British herding dogs.
