Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Cane Corso, also called Italian courtyard dog, descends from the large molossers used in ancient Italy. Selected to guard properties, protect livestock and accompany certain hunting activities, it was mainly maintained in the south of Italy. The breed experienced a clear decline in the 20th century before being revived by enthusiasts in the 1970s, then officially recognized in Italy and by the FCI.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Cane Corso is a large molossoid dog with a compact, robust and very muscular body. Its head is broad with a pronounced stop and a powerful muzzle, while its coat is short and dense. The coat can be black, grey, fawn or brindle. The overall impression is one of strength, stability and athleticism, without excessive heaviness.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

The Cane Corso is a well-balanced dog, self-confident and very protective of its own. Affectionate with its family, it also knows how to be calm at home when its needs are met. Its natural vigilance makes it an excellent guardian, but it is not aggressive without reason. It needs a clear framework and a consistent owner to best express its stable and loyal temperament.

Affectionate Playful Intelligent Sociable Protective

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

On a daily basis, the Cane Corso stays close to its home and observes its surroundings a lot. It likes to take part in family life and copes poorly with a life that is too passive or prolonged isolation. A sporty dog, it needs regular outings, control exercises and useful activities to stay comfortable in its paws. In the presence of strangers, it can be reserved and deterrent.

Training

## Training and socialization

The education of the Cane Corso must be early, firm within the framework but always fair. This intelligent dog understands well what is expected of him, but his assertive character requires consistency and real control on the part of the handler. Socialization from the youngest age, work on recall, self-control and leash walking are essential. This is not the easiest breed for a beginner without guidance.

Budget

## Price and budget for the Cane Corso

The price of a Cane Corso varies depending on the quality of the bloodlines, the seriousness of the breeding, the screenings carried out and compliance with the standard. Beyond the purchase price, you must anticipate a maintenance budget higher than that of a smaller dog, notably for food and health monitoring.

Health

## Health at a glance

The Cane Corso is overall a sturdy dog, but its large size requires orthopedic and digestive vigilance. Like many molossoids, it benefits from monitored growth, stable weight and serious breeding with screenings. Good lifestyle hygiene helps preserve its mobility and comfort over time.

Nutrition

## Feeding your pet well

The Cane Corso needs a complete, digestible diet that is well proportioned to its size, age and activity level. The quality of the ration plays a direct role in growth, muscle mass, joint condition and maintaining an appropriate weight.

Did you know?

## Fun facts and popularity

The name Cane Corso is generally linked to the idea of a protective or guard dog. Highly appreciated as a property guardian in Italy, it is today sought after as much for its deterrent presence as for its attachment to its family. The breed has also gained visibility thanks to cinema and the work of enthusiasts who have contributed to its modern preservation.
