Health

# The Cairn Terrier's health

United Kingdom

The Cairn Terrier is an overall robust dog, selected to withstand difficult climatic conditions. It does not present any particular major health problem, but its skin and coat must be monitored with age.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its average life expectancy is around 14 years. A suitable diet, regular activity, attentive skin care and veterinary follow-up help preserve its quality of life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its hardy build, its protective double coat and its stamina give it good overall resistance. This robustness does not exempt it from preventive monitoring, especially when the dog gets older.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Vigilance mainly concerns the evolution of the skin and coat in the elderly dog. Any lasting change in sebum, odor, itching, or the appearance of the coat warrants veterinary advice.

- Seborrheic dermatitis: With age, some individuals may develop excessive sebum production, giving the coat a greasy appearance and promoting infections if the skin is not monitored and cared for.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Its harsh outer coat and dense undercoat protect it effectively from bad weather. It tolerates cold and heat moderately and must have a dry shelter, fresh water and suitable activity during extreme temperatures.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Its ration must match its actual energy expenditure. Despite its dynamism, quantities must be measured, treats counted and its body condition checked regularly in order to avoid gradual weight gain.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have the skin and coat examined if they appear greasy, have an odor, or are itchy.
- Keep vaccinations and antiparasitic treatments up to date.
- Monitor weight and body condition throughout life.
- Regularly check the ears, teeth, and nails.

Vaccination

## Cairn Terrier vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Cairn Terrier need? Like all dogs, Cairn Terriers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Cairn Terrier vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Cairn Terrier booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Cairn Terrier

A regular veterinary examination is recommended, with particular attention paid to the skin and coat as it ages. Weight, teeth, ears and claws checks complete this preventive monitoring.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.
