Health

# The Bull Terrier's health

United Kingdom

The Bull Terrier can live a long time when it benefits from regular monitoring, but several hereditary predispositions justify rigorous selection and appropriate screening. Deafness, certain skin, joint, kidney and heart disorders are among the main points of vigilance.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its life expectancy is generally between 11 and 14 years, with an average close to 13 years. A well-portioned diet, regular activity and preventive veterinary follow-up help preserve its quality of life.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

Its build is athletic and generally robust, but this apparent sturdiness must not conceal the hereditary conditions present in certain lines. The choice of a breeder carrying out the recommended screenings is decisive.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Careful veterinary monitoring is recommended from the youngest age, notably for hearing, skin, joints, kidneys and the heart. Any persistent itching, lameness, drop in condition or change in water consumption should lead to a consultation.

- Hereditary deafness: The breed is predisposed to deafness, which justifies hearing screening with a BAER test.
- Heart conditions: Some lines show a predisposition to heart disease and require appropriate monitoring.
- Hip dysplasia and patellar luxation: These joint disorders can cause pain and lameness and must be monitored.
- Kidney conditions: Kidney problems exist in some lines and may justify blood and urine tests.
- Allergies and skin disorders: White individuals are particularly exposed to allergies and various skin problems.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

Its very short coat offers little protection from cold and bad weather. In very hot weather, activity must be adapted and access to shade guaranteed. Areas of skin with little coverage, especially in white dogs, may require suitable veterinary sun protection.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

Very greedy, the Bull Terrier can quickly swallow its ration and gain weight. Meals must be weighed, extras limited, its body condition monitored regularly, and energy intake adjusted to its activity.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Have a BAER hearing test performed.
- Monitor the skin and ears regularly.
- Consult in case of lameness or decreased activity.
- Plan cardiac and renal follow-up depending on the bloodline.
- Protect areas of light skin during heavy sun exposure.

Vaccination

## Bull Terrier vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Bull Terrier need? Like all dogs, Bull Terriers should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Bull Terrier vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Bull Terrier booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Enter your companion's age to see which vaccines are due now and when the next boosters are needed.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Bull Terrier

Before breeding and during individual follow-up, the BAER hearing test is a priority. A cardiac check-up, a renal evaluation and an orthopedic check of the hips and patellas are also relevant depending on the line and the veterinarian's recommendations.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.

## The best prevention starts with a good breeder

Choose a breeder who screens their breeding animals for inherited conditions. We'll help you find one.
