Origins

## Where does it come from?

The Griffon Bruxellois is one of the three small Belgian dogs, alongside the Griffon Belge and the Petit Brabançon. It descends from the Smousje, a small rough-haired dog from the Brussels region, then was shaped by contributions from breeds such as the King Charles Spaniel Ruby and the Pug in order to obtain its current type. The first specimens were registered in the Livre des Origines Saint-Hubert in 1883, before definitive recognition by the FCI in 1954.

Appearance

## What does it look like?

The Griffon Bruxellois is a small compact dog, solid and almost square in its proportions. Its head is broad and round in relation to the body, with a very distinctive expression said to be almost human, large dark eyes, a black nose and a slightly undershot lower jaw. Its coat is red to reddish, sometimes shaded with a little black on the head, and its harsh hair forms pronounced furnishings on the cheeks and chin.

Temperament

## Temperament and personality

Lively, cheerful, curious and proud, the Griffon Bruxellois develops a strong attachment to its owner and seeks real closeness with its family. It is generally alert without being aggressive, sensitive to the atmosphere of the home and capable of a fine bond on a daily basis. Its small size does not prevent it from having character, which requires a consistent and respectful relationship.

Affectionate Intelligent Sociable

Living together

## Living with children and other pets

He appreciates routines, frequent interactions and a sufficient daily outing to maintain his balance. Indoors, he can be observant and quite vocal when he perceives movement or something new.

Training

## Training and socialization

His training benefits from starting early, with simple, consistent rules and a positive approach. Intelligent and attentive, he learns well when motivation is present, but his assertive temperament can make him a bit stubborn if the framework lacks clarity. Early socialization and gentle work on self-control help him become a very pleasant companion.
