Health

# The Brittany Spaniel's health

France

The Épagneul Breton is overall a hardy and resilient dog, with generally satisfactory health when it comes from a reputable breeder and benefits from regular monitoring. The main points of vigilance mainly concern the joints and the ears, more exposed in an active dog that readily spends time outdoors.

Longevity

## Life expectancy

Its lifespan is most often between 12 and 14 years. A well-adjusted diet, maintaining a stable weight, a regular level of activity and the prevention of joint disorders contribute directly to allowing it to age in good conditions.

Constitution

## Is this a robust breed?

This breed has good endurance and a rather rustic profile, compatible with an active life. It is not among the most fragile breeds, but it deserves serious selection for health and particular attention to the ears, eyes and locomotor system.

Things to watch for

## What to look out for

Vigilance mainly concerns dysplasia, certain rarer neurological or endocrine conditions, and otitis promoted by the shape of the ears and outdoor life. Regular veterinary follow-up helps to identify warning signs early and to adjust activity if needed.

- Hip dysplasia: A joint malformation that can cause pain, lameness, and discomfort during exertion, with variable expression depending on the individual.
- Elbow dysplasia: A developmental disorder of the elbow that can cause stiffness, forelimb lameness, and chronic discomfort.
- Otitis: Drooping ears and frequent outdoor outings promote the retention of moisture or debris, which can trigger infections.
- Epilepsy: Some lines may experience seizures requiring a veterinary diagnosis and appropriate follow-up.
- Hypothyroidism: This hormonal condition can result in reduced fitness, weight gain, and skin disorders.
- Spinal muscular atrophy: This rare neurological condition affects motor function and requires prompt management when suspected.

Climate

## Tolerance to cold and heat

The Épagneul Breton tolerates rather well moderate cold thanks to its vitality and its active life, but it tolerates strong heat less well. In summer, outings should be favored during cool hours, shade should be provided, intense effort should be limited and constant hydration should be ensured.

Weight

## Prone to weight gain

This breed can gain weight if its ration is not adapted to its actual expenditure. As there are large variations between a moderately active companion dog and a very athletic subject, it is important to adjust the ration on a case-by-case basis and to regularly monitor the silhouette.

Everyday care

## Good habits to keep your pet healthy

- Check and clean the ears regularly after outings.
- Monitor the gait and any persistent lameness.
- Maintain a stable weight to protect the joints.
- Schedule preventive veterinary follow-up at least once a year.

Vaccination

## Brittany Spaniel vaccinations: schedule

Which vaccines does a Brittany Spaniel need? Like all dogs, Brittany Spaniels should receive their core vaccines from 8 weeks of age: CHPPi (core vaccine) and Leptospirosis. Puppies receive their initial Brittany Spaniel vaccinations in several shots spaced 4 weeks apart, followed by a first booster at 1 year. Depending on their lifestyle (hunting, hiking, boarding, travel, region), your veterinarian may add vaccines against Rabies, Kennel cough, Piroplasmosis, Lyme disease and Leishmaniasis.

| Vaccine | Primary vaccination | First booster | Then | For whom? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| CHPPi (core vaccine)Core Distemper, Rubarth hepatitis, parvovirosis and parainfluenza | 8 weeks · 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| LeptospirosisCore Leptospirosis (bacterium transmitted by rodent urine and stagnant water) | 8 weeks · 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | All animals |
| RabiesDepending on lifestyle Rabies | 12 weeks | 1 year | every year | Mandatory for travel abroad, categorized dogs, most boarding kennels and shows |
| Kennel coughDepending on lifestyle Bordetella bronchiseptica and parainfluenza | 8 weeks | 1 year | every year | Dogs attending boarding kennels, daycares, dog clubs and shows |
| PiroplasmosisDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne babesiosis | 5 months · 6 months | 1 year | every year | Hunting dogs, dogs living in rural or wooded areas, dogs highly exposed to ticks |
| Lyme diseaseDepending on lifestyle Tick-borne borreliosis | 12 weeks · 3 months | 1 year | every year | Hiking dogs, hunting dogs, forest areas of the East and the Center |
| LeishmaniasisDepending on lifestyle Leishmaniasis transmitted by sandflies | 6 months | 1 year and 6 months | every year | Dogs living or staying in the South of France, Corsica and the Mediterranean basin |

Adult Brittany Spaniel booster shots are given annually for leptospirosis and rabies. For distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus, a booster every three years is often enough after the first booster. Your veterinarian will tailor the schedule to your dog's actual risk.

Choosing well

## Adopting a healthy Brittany Spaniel

Before breeding or adoption from a kennel, it is relevant to check hip screenings and ophthalmological follow-up. Depending on the lines and family history, the veterinarian may also recommend additional vigilance regarding the elbow, the thyroid, or certain neurological disorders.

This information is for guidance only and doesn't replace advice from a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your pet's health, consult a professional.
